OT: My first laps on the legendary Nordschleife
I posted this in the racing forum but wanted to share this with my favourite rennlist board; the 993 crowd. There is also little 993 content in the end...
I visited the Nürburgring last weekend and did my first ever laps on the legendary Nordschleife.
This was during "Touristenfahrte". I was driving Ring-Attack's VLN prepped (V4 class) E36 325i with 190hp.
The car is slow on the straights but handles very well in the corners.
I managed a BTG 8:46 lap in some traffic (with a 85kg passenger).
On Sunday I was driving a Renault Megane RS with some track modifications (half cage etc.)
With that car I turned a BTG 8:29 lap (also with a passenger).
On Sunday afternoon pro-driver Jess Krohn was riding with me and he showed me the fastest way around the track.
For the record, Jesse holds the current track record for the VLN 24h variante (GP track + Nordschleife) in CUP-5 class (BMW M235i CUP cars)
I am quite confident I will shave several seconds from the lap time upon my next visit.
I have to say driving on Nordschleife made a big impact on my future plans. No more track driving in Finland, I will focus 99% on Nürburgring. (and perhaps SPA etc.)
During next winter we will most likely build a VLN SP6 class E46 M3 for me and I will do some RCN races with it on the Nürburgring and later also VLN.
The natural progression of course is I race the 993 GT2 there in the future.... =)
That track is just magical…there are no words to describe, other than heaven on earth!!!
A 8:49 BTG lap with the E36. (I edited a short part out of it because my driving was not appropriate for Touristenfahrte).

Nicely done! It's not just dealing with the track itself, but the varying amount of traffic -> most seemed to be aware of what is happening around them, but some seemed to be oblivious. Great work!
How did that car feel as compared to your 993?
Cheers,
Mike

Yes, definitely! I will race it first in the RCN series and later on in VLN and perhaps some other series there.
The E36 is very easy to drive fast. It feels different (very light tail, not as accurate as the Porsche and the overall feel is very different).
I've been racing a E36 for 6 years now so I'm very familiar with the platform.
The Renault.?..don't get me started on that...it's quick but horrible to drive. Not my cup of tea.
It is really something different this track. The elevation change from lowest to highest point of the track is 1000ft!!!!
There are such "crevasses" that if you were bicycling there, you'd want to walk the bike up and down some of the hills. They are that steep! This is something you will realise only after you have visited the track. The videos don't do justice at all.
With the BMW abt. 210km/h. I'm on full throttle for over 3.5km when climbing up towards hohe acht (highest point of the track), with a powerful car (like a Porsche GT3 or a Turbo) you'll easily hit +280km/h.

What's the format to get on the road? I read that the Touristenfahrten is typically only on Weekends. Do you pay per lap or per day?
This is also on my buckets list!
