991 GT3 production ending
I thought the topic deserved a thread of its own. Mods please move or delete if you see fit.
This is a followup to a post yesterday by Superman32:
Well I too just spoke to my dealer and they have confirmed that production of GT3 ends in Februaury 2015. The production line switches to the RS. So, GT3 buyers with confirmed commission numbers can rest easy, those without.....

I just got a call form my sales yesterday.
Porsche just informed dealers that 991 GT3 production will stop on February 28 2015. Then they will start making 991 GT3 RS.
So there will not be too many 991 gt3s. They can't promise me I can get my 2015 order.
So I guess 991 gt3 will hold it's value pretty well. Anyway 130K for a 991 GT3 is extremely good value for money. And it includes PDK and PCM already.
Also if next gen gt3 will become turbo charged 991gt3 will hold it's value even better.

This could be good news for 991 GT3 owners, but really depends on what 991.2 gt3 have....

Very few dealers or salesmen know as much as we do, those that spend countless hours on the internet fact finding on our passion. Dealers are there to tell us what we want to hear and pass along what PNA wants them to. In the process with this GT3, not once did PNA or my sales rep call and give me information I had not already read here. It's like waiting for the morning paper to find out what happen yesterday... It's old news.
There are obviously a few driven salesmen, engineers or other industry professionals that have the same passion that we have and are of great benefit when it comes to knowledge. I believe most of those are on here anonymously sharing the intel. You know the guys on here that seem to have the most reliable details before they are public time and time again. This is not coming from your average dealer.

He's right about dealers in general, but there are times where they do actually know something. I do think that, given the production history of past GT3s, this information on production timeline is likely correct.
Porsche is not stupid. Niche cars like the GT3 are NOT money makers. Sure, they make some, but it's not a cash cow like some of their other models. They are smart to make slightly less than demand because:
a) It keeps the excitement, value, and exclusivity of these cars up
b) They won't make much money buy selling several hundred/few thousand more of the cars anyway. Their resources are better spent on the high volume/profit cars
c) The enthusiast pool is very small, and it dries up QUICKLY. There's tons of excitement at first. Enthusiasts line up to buy right away because that's the way we are, and then all of the sudden nobody is left. The BRZ/FRS is a great example. Mass market, highly praised car. Dealers are selling above MRSP, and people are on wait lists for the first year the car was on sale. Now they are rotting on lots, selling below invoice, and considered a sales failure because 'regular car buyers' think the car is a horrible value to him. At this point, all of the people that really wanted one have one, and many have moved on to something else.
If you cater to enthusiasts, you will lose money. Every time.
I'm very happy that Porsche continues to make cars like the GT3, but have a fear that greed for more short term profit and sales will eventually eclipse certain cars and sacrifice long term vision. It's my understanding that fantastic cars like the cayman sell horribly despite the glowing reviews and ardent fans. I would be very sad, but not surprised to see a car like the cayman eventually disappear....

You DO know that's how all the prior generation GT3s came out, right? If history is any indicator, it will be a 2017 model arriving in showrooms 2016.
