Here is a fun statistic. Tuned M2 clocks similar time as the GT3 RS with an amateur driver and traffic.

Got my manual M2 last fall and couldn't be happier. The M3 does check more boxes with four doors and more space if that is a must...but I disagree with fit and finish being highly superior to the M2. It can be comfortably daily driven.... and actually sounds pretty good (Should only be driven in Sport-plus mode). It's one of those cars that just really works.

I'd still take a 6MT e92 M3 with the N/A S65 V8 (and ZCP, please) over the M2/3/4 any day of the week.

I found this 3 car review very interesting...

I owned both E92 manual and F80 dct
the 6MT was not a good transmission , with notchy gear shifts and the car was heavy
f80 is much lighter and DCT is superb , what is missing is engine sound and steering feel
Actually looking at buying another M3 for my son ,as after extensive driving of M2, we felt it is a good car but not close to M3 on a variety of levels

In regards to a "fun driving experience", the M2 is my personal favorite since the Z3M Coupe.

Driven M2 and M235 on track and daily drive M235 for 2 years for another month until M2 comes in. Its a great daily. Chipped stat 400/400. 0-60 is 4 flat. Its a hoot! Steering though is numb on M235. M2 is perfect and was MUCH more enjoyable than M3 on track for me. M3 motor is mighty but it just wasn't as fun!

I have not driven it on track, but it holds its own in the canyons. To be blunt, it won't give me the fastest lap times like a GT3/RS. It's not a bruiser/cruiser like the M3/M4. It is simply distilled/compacted FUN, which is what I want from a BMW. There is this feeling that David E Davis would have liked this car.

thanks. Do you think the m2 is as much fun as a GT3/RS in the canyons?

For half the money, I'd rather have the MX-5.

Base MSRP of a 2017 M2 is USD 52K

Base MSRP of a 2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 is USD 25K.

Easy choice for me, even if the price delta wasn't nearly 2x.
