Looked at a silver/black auto 1989 S4 with 39K

I have been into 928s for a long time but have never owned one yet. This car is ten minutes from me, so I checked it out and drove it yesterday. Definitely a clean number #2 condition car going by Hagerty guidance. A few paint chips on bumpers (no dings anywhere) and from what I could tell some light oil seepage coming from possibly a valve cover gasket. I'd have to get it on a lift to trace it. Everything electronic in the car worked, and it just had new rims/tires put on as well as $4,600 in maintenance at a Porsche dealership which included timing belt, water pump, pulleys, and some other odds and ends. It was truly a very nice example that was well-cared for its entire life. With that said, I've been out of the Porsche world for some time and was shocked at the 32K asking price. The car was mistakenly listed on eBay without reserve, and someone won it at $19,600, but they refused to honor it and told the auction winner they'd sell it for 28K. Hagerty puts a #2 1989 S4 at 28K, minus 20% for auto trans, so 22-23K is more realistic. Recent ebay selling prices reflect that value as well. I really like the car but not enough to pay a large premium on it. Advice or recent buying experiences? I'm pretty sure I can still get a low mileage pristine S4 for around 20K, or am I way off?

Three Wheelin'
Were you the high bidder?
That's a Richard move by the seller, who ought to have known better, or had their kid help them with the listing. It's not difficult.
No, I don't think you are off base, price-wise.

Nice looking car. But grandiose pricing at 32k or even 28k. I would also say that's a #2 on Hagerty's scale.
Engine bay doesn't look taken care of. The fuel pressure gauge scares me, the air filter is f-ed up and dare I say what is missing near the right fender?

Not sure about the pristine part ... what happened to the spoiler? Honestly, I think there are much nicer 928s out there at this price point.
Interesting the part about deducting 20% for a Rogerbox, hadn't heard that one before ;-)

Yes, it was very clean with the flaws I've already mentioned and what others have pointed out. For a 26 year old car, I'd put it close to excellent condition, hence the #2 Hagerty rating. I've explained to them the recent ebay sales, the current real market values, and nit picked the flaws mentioned already. It is a nice car but not perfect. Their price reflects a perfect car, which this is not. They are being receptive so far. They've had it a while and are looking to move it. We'll see...

Yes. Missing that and the poor front bumper cover respray.

This seems like a lot of money for this car. I hope that I'm wrong and this means that values are finally increasing. Personally I'd pay no more than $17K for this car as presented in this market.

That's not a Hagerty #2 in the slightest, at least not once you open the hood.
Put $3k into an engine refresh, and you might be there. Price accordingly.
#2 cars could win a local or regional show. They can be former #1 cars that have been driven or have aged. Seasoned observers will have to look closely for flaws, but will be able to find some not seen by the general public.

There's a lower spoiler there? No wonder it looked off to me. That explains paint flake. Between a number 2-3 condition is probably more accurate. Someone must have nailed a parking block. Yeah, I think I'll keep looking. Thank you so much for watching out for me. PM me if you happen to find something. Prefer 87-89. Not opposed to 85-86 either.
