Flag Mirror Dis-assembly
I need to perform a color change on my left and right flag mirrors, as part of a much larger color change project for the car. It pained me to just shoot paint into the various articulated joints so I decided to pursue disassembly. Start with the DIY on Clarks Garage website, where he describes how to remove the mirror and access the innards. Once you get past that step (which is not obvious) the rest is fairly obvious. Having the 3 separate pieces allowed me to bead blast off all of the paint. Wow, I don't get to spend much time looking at raw castings but me thinks these are very nice! I now also understand why the mirrors are so heavy. I'm excited to get the new paint applied.

I don't recall the exact number, but I remember taking them off my old '84 when I parted it and being surprised enough at the heft to put them on my scale. I think they're around 4-5 lb apiece.

Update - Painting Complete
I finished painting my mirror parts. The blue is Glasurit 22 line single stage. The black is a simple matte black spray can trim paint I bought at Autozone.
One advantage of mirror disassembly is that the new paint wraps right down into the various joined surfaces. Another advantage is that I was able to lubricate the spring loaded joint that allows the mirrors to be rotated inward. I'm really pleased with the results!
