Default Oil Cooler, sealant or no!

Last night just finished putting the oil cooler back on after installing new gasket set with new style O rings, I used the" remove the exhaust headers" process to remove the cooler. while doing all this decided to rebuild the PS pump. All back together and started the engine, after normal running temperature the PS is fine, cooler has a leak, I made sure the gasket seat was clean, did not use any sealant in replacing the all in one gasket, torqued to proper value from Clark's Garage, very aggravating knowing I have to do over again, what a pain! Should have I used a sealant is the question?

I don't use any sealant on any gasket and most definitely not needed on the oil cooler gasket. The oil cooler gasket r&r is a fairly easy job, removing the exhaust manifolds are a pita. I can't speak for other model years, but on my 83 I didn't have to remove the exhaust manifolds and there was plenty of room to work with.

No sealant. Clean surfaces carefully with a single-edge razor. Cleanliness is key!

Shim the cooler as the factory TSB describes.

Mine is an '84 built in 12/84, when I was removing the cooler it did not seem like it could be removed from the top without removing the exhaust header.

One thing about trying to answering questions on a forum is that your not there to see what's going on. I bet you do have the room. I mean how much different could a 84 be? Okay, mine doesn't have power steering but I'm guessing the reason your pulling the manifolds is to get access to the two top bolt's. I think you should be able to get in there with the right size extension bar. I have to ask this and in no way I'm not trying to insult you, but did you first remove the little shield mounted on the cooler housing? That could make all the difference. I looked Clark's page and there's no mention of that shield.

Jurgen made a video about this a while ago and he did use Curl-T to help seal the gasket. While not 100% necessary, I understand his reasoning and it's something I would do just for the extra piece of mind.

I also used Curil-T when I did mine, mainly to help keep the gasket in place. No leaks and no issues thousands of miles later.

I used sealant on the outer gasket but not the internal o-rings. Same happened to my water pump install. Had to go back in & add sealant. Doesn't leak a drop now.
