Porsche 997: Why is My Radio Not Working?

This guide will troubleshoot some of the more common problems that can happen with the Porsche 997's radio and head unit.

This article applies to the Porsche 997 (2005-2012).

It's not uncommon for the Porsche 997 radio to have problems, but you may want to hold off on the expense of replacing it. There could be a simple and cheaper solution available. If you're having problems selecting the stations you want to go to, having power issues, your radio is stuck, your radio turns on but little or no sound is coming out, or your radio simply doesn't work at all, then look no further than this helpful troubleshooting guide.

Step 1 – Change the radio settings

Some settings such as the traffic program setting will make the tuner focus on certain stations over others. Navigate to your radio settings to turn it off.

Step 2 – Check the fuses

If the radio isn't turning on or it's stuck and won't respond, try resetting it by pulling the fuse.

  • Pull out the side carpeting on the driver's side footwell to access the fuse box.
  • Find the fuse for the radio and pull it out.
  • If it's burnt out or won't carry a current, then it needs to be replaced (check the current with a multimeter).
  • If it still carries a current then return it to the fuse box.

Step 3 – Replace the amplifier

If you hear nothing coming from your speakers or just a low static noise, then it means that your amplifier is dying and needs to be replaced. Sometimes, you can pull the fuse to fix this problem, but it's only a temporary solution.

  • You'll find the amplifier in the front luggage compartment behind the spare tire.
  • Disconnect all the plugs to the amplifier.
  • Remove the old amp from the bracket.
  • Install new amp to the bracket.
  • Reconnect all of the electrical connections.

Step 4 – Replace the PCM

When all else fails, you'll probably have to replace the PCM head unit. A replacement costs around $2,100 at the dealership. If your vehicle is still under warranty, then you should take it to a dealership before replacing it. If not, then you may want to consider finding a replacement head unit online.

  • Pull out the side panels around the head unit (held by Torx screws in both of the footwell areas).
  • Remove the set screw on the right side of the head unit, and twist the two Allen screws on both sides.
  • Use a pry tool to loosen the head unit then slide it out. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  • To install a new head unit, reconnect the electrical connectors.
  • Slide it into place and tighten the four Allen screws. Then, reinsert the set screw.
  • Return the side panels and secure them with the Torx screws.

Pro Tip

Whenever you have an issue like this, take a video of the problem and show it to the technicians at the dealership. Not only does this give you proof that the problem exists, but it helps them determine the problem and solve it.
