Post Can I fit 235/45/17 or 245/45/17 on the front of my Carrera

Well can I? I figured a 225 would probaly fit but can I fit these sizes? I am using 993 5 star rims and I know the tire wil fit them but wil they rub? I am putting 275/40's in the back.

What Carrera model, what size wheels, what offset on your Carrera, what offset wheels.
Not enough to answer your question with unless it is a 964. The answer is lots of wheel rub at the rear and depending on the model year, some to lots at the front,
Ciao,

PS: Assuming a 9JX16 or 17 wheel on the rear, the 275s are FAR TOO WIDE for a 9 inch wide wheel on a Porsche.

The car is a 1985 911 Carrea Turbo-Look. 275's will fit a 9 inch rim easy! I know because I have know people who have done it and it works great.

I agree with Adrian, it's your money, but why fit wider tyres?

Porsche fitted 205/50's on the front to give excellent steering feel, wider tyres really spoil the feel of the car and will cause it to tram line especially under hard braking

I would just stick with 205/50 on the front and 255/40 on the back

you Yanks do seem to like huge wheels and tyres!!!!

Well, I'm going to try to answer your question, not judge it like some other asses. On a torsion body car with turbo flares, you should be able to fit up to 275/40's in the front and 315/35's possibly 335/35's depending on how carefully you figure out your wheel offsets. Care must be taken to roll the fender lips, and run the appropriate negative camber. Personally, I run 255's on 9's and 315's on 11's on my 930. These sizes fit no problemo with the car very low. For what it's worth, I have seen 245/275 combo fit on a SC/Carrera flared car. Really depends on the wheel widths and offsets.

I am not trying to make a judgment, I am trying to give some common sense advice based on experience.

Like my 964 RS, a torsion bar 911 has no power steering, fitting 275's on the front will just make it a real pig to drive.

225 is about as wide as I would recommend

George, you asked why fit wider tires...

I guess there's different reasons. If you choose to drive the car in autocrosses or track events, it's what you need to do to be competitive and have fun. Bottom line is 245 front and 275 rear are the hot setup for both C2's and RSA's. If you're using something smaller you're not as competitive (assuming equal drivers skill of course). Stock sizes were set to eliminate as much of the over steer conditions as possible. And it just plain sucks to drive fast with that setup. If you want the car to "dance" through the cones, you need a little oversteer. That makes it fun. Tuning the chassis is easy with tire pressures, alignment, and sway bars.

Then there's it just looks cool to run wide tires too

What experience are you refering to???

My experience involves 6 years with 911's, daily driving and track days.

My previous 1977 Carerra 3.0 was fitted with 16" rims 205/55's front and 225/50 rear and I never felt I needed more traction or grip even on the limit at circuits like Goodwood.

My current German spec 964 RS lightweight produces 270bhp and is on standard wheel and tyre widths, I have tried an RS on 18" rims with wider tyres and it was a horrible experience.

Part of the appeal of a 911 is the directness of the steering which is helped by narrow front tyres.

I am sorry but I just don't agree that just fitting widers tyres makes a better track car, I would always prefer to improve my ability rather than upgrade the equipment

but hey, what do I know!!!!

Nice....see that just goes to show that we can all learn something. I can honestly say I've never heard that the 911's appeal is narrow front tires.

Jeff

The photo was taken in the summer, the car is currently wearing 17" 993 cup wheels as the very expensive magnesium cups are being refurbished for the second time!!!!

Our damp winters and salty roads ruin everything!!!!

Nice turbo, I have to admit the 18" speedline split rims do look great, you need powersteering though!!!!

Thanks. I run the stock cup rims at the track (225 front and 255 rear Kumho Victoracers). Somehow I got hooked up with a bunch of speed freaks and it's all about going faster. It's a never ending battle. A buddy has a 94 RSA and we swapped cars for an autocross. Very fast! I'd swap the Turbo any day on a tight track. Although the most fun I've had was driving a well prepared 78SC....go figure. Next season I'm going to suck it up and upgrade to Hoosiers. Right now I'm looking at 245/40 for the front and 275/40 in the rear. I'd like to go bigger in the rear but I'm not sure 315's will fit. You'd think with the wider fenders it would be possible. No suck luck. The lower control arm interferes with the wider rims.
