Cheap wheel studs: where to buy?
I've read often on this list people taking about 3$ wheel studs. Does anyone know where can I get those? The regular shops sell them for 5$ to 7$ each.
I need 66mm ones to fit my new wheels. Any clue?
Thx
Serge

Serge,
You need to be careful with aftermarket studs. I had to buy a replacement set of 66mm studs, I think they were Weltmeister(??) brand from Performance Products, around $50 or so for 10 a couple of years ago. The reason I needed to change them was because 7 out of 10 of the old studs on the front axle started to shear the shank of the stud out of the head when torquing the wheel nuts. The old studs were already on the car when I bought it. I know they weren't Porsche original, as my local OPC confirmed that Porsche don't make 66mm studs. Drove me crazy trying to figure out what was happening at first, as it felt like the aluminum nuts were stripping when I torqued them.
The Weltmeister replacements looked to be a better quality than the old ones. Worth the extra few bucks to avoid losing a wheel!
cheers
Derek

Thanks for the info Derek, I sure don't want to risk loosing a wheel for a few bucks...
How did you manage to get the new studs to hold if your previous studs were turning? Did they eat up the hub?
Ciao!

Serge,
The studs weren't turning, rather, the threaded shanks were pulling clean through their heads! If I had carried on torquing the nuts, I would have ended up with the shank completely separated from the head. When I removed the old studs, you could clearly see a hole opened up on the top face of the head where the shank had started to shear and pull through the head.
I posted on rennlist at the time but no-one else had ever heard of this problem. I checked my torque wrench and I definitely wasn't over-torquing them. The funny thing was, I had removed the wheels several times before without any problem. This problem suddenly occurred when I swapped winter for summer wheels.
The rears were fine, but they had thicker spacers, which may have been either Porsche items or from a different manufacturer.
cheers

Mine were Porsche units that the shop secured for me. Cost was under $4 - seems they were about $3.75 each. Ask for a discount or buy them from Sunset Porsche in Oregon. They will sell you any Porsche part at cost plus 15%.

Ok,
Just got the price from Sunset. They quoted 7.52$ each.... So far, all prices I've seen were above 6$ (ebay 6.95$, vertex, europroducts, paragon ...)
Any other ideas?
Serge

Here's some part# to help you track these things down:
904.341.671.00 - 45mm wheel stud
911.331.671.00 - 65mm wheel stud
901.331.671.01 - 72mm wheel stud
Troutman has them for $4

Thanks all for the good hints..
Finally, I called Troutman as Danno recommended, they indeed have domestic studs for 4$, but were out yesterday. They had only the german OEM at 5$ (still good).
Hugh, I checked Paragon as well, they sell at 4.06 as you said. I finally bought those..
I also called Tweeks and GPR but they were selling higher. I hate paying too much for any item (expensive or not), especially when that too much is multiplicated by 1.55 (Canadian exchange rate.... ).
Thx again to all!!
