Dunlop Super Sport Race "R"compound
I was delivered by mistake these tires for my '97 TT.. If anyone has tried them/know them, can you please help before I mount them (I do not race or do DEs as not available in this country):
1- Are they "driveable" for other than racing
2- Approximate life expectancy
3- Impressions on grip, cornering , noise, comfort..
I cannot seem to find any info in Tirerack and the likes nor in the Rennlist archives.
Many Thanks
Jean

Jean,
These tires are not available in the US. At least, not yet. However, if they are anything like other R-compound tires, such as the Pilot Sport Cup or P-Zero Corsa, they should be fine for street driving. Especially, in hot and dry climates such as yours may be. Life expentancy is about half that of maximum performance tires, at best.

Hi Jean, Dunlop Motorsport do have a website, dont have the address to hand but found it on a 'google' search (www.google.com). you need to supply a bit more info about the tyre, the typical one used here on porsches for road legal track tyre is Dunlop Motorsport Formula R type D01J..they have good reputation for wear and grip and work in the wet, bit more tread depth than Michelin Pilot Sport Cup , some say safer in wet ( maybe that doesn't concern you! ), a lot cheaper

Viken, Oldtimer,
Many thanks for your help. They do seem similar to the Pilot Sport Cup. The treadwear rating is 60 which tells me they belong to the same category. I will try to take a picture of them before mounting today for the archives. Their use will be strictly in dry hot weather as Viken mentioned so should not be an issue.
All the best. Jean

As a follow up, I thought about posting a picture for the archives. For info, the tires are 235/40 Fr and 285/30 in the Rr. The weight of the tires is approx. 22lbs. front and 24Lbs. in the rear (measured on my home scale).
The grip in the tires is excellent, as well as the overall stability, I have not tried them on a track however, with aggressive street cornering, the car slides by < 1 meter where my previous P Zeros used to slide 3-4 meters. They are noisy and uncomfortable on small street bumps, and the amount of rubber dust they release is enough to cover the yellow rear bumper with a thin black layer. Here is the link: http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/Dunlop.jpg
in case someone is interested.

They seem to have a lot of rubber blocks on the edges which would make me think they would not handle as well as tire with less. Maybe that's one of the sources of rubber dust? Just a thought.

Hi Jean, the tread pattern on the pictures you posted corresponds to Dunlop SP9000, a high performance road tyre. If I knew how to upload a jpg file like you did, I could post what the D01J tread looks like. seeing as you want a road tyre rather than a road legal track tyre you should be OK, if the rubber is Formula R compound then its sticky ( when hot ). The D01J is an out and out gripper....

Jean,
Those are definitely street tires. Nice tread. Where you are (hot), these tires will STICK. Because it's a soft compound they probably won't last more than 16,000 - 20,000 miles. They sacrifice longevity for grip. They look like they'd perform well in the rain.
Good luck.

These are not the SP9000. They are a "clubrace" version of the road going SP9000, not widely distributed. They go the way of the P ZeroC/Corsa, and the Michelin Sport for PCA.

Hi Ed, I am based in UK and we can get tyres direct from Dunlop Motorsport. I don't know if they have US agent ( should do). Thanks to Viken we have a good picture of the D01J tread pattern, the rubber is formula R....enough data to track them down I hope. They are road legal and last a long time but obviously intended for track use. The 'tread' is a lot deeper than Michelin Pilot Sport Cups when seen in the flesh, the other comparable tyre that springs to mind is the new Pirelli P Zero Corsa but I've not seen actual example yet.

Sorry to revive this post, I have been away for a while.. Just for some added clarification, it seems that these tires are classified as "Formula R Street Legal Race tires". SuperSport Race
Either way, I can attest that grip is outstanding, I will get an opportunity to use them in a very twisty 3 lap race event to be held by the local Porsche Club in 2 weeks (war permitting)..If I beat a friends' Roock 996 540hp on PZeros, I'll know why (Although he probably won't )

Jean,
I have also tried a set of the D01J 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 on my 964 that I auto X her in the UAE and boy are they noisy and sticky!! Sounds like a tank but loads of grip!! Im selling this set after 500km use since I can not live with the noise. I have 2 sets of wheels and will keep my 17" with Michelin Cups (for now) or other brand for auto X and the 18" with Yoko AVS for street use, honestly I do not know what I was thinking when I ordered a 2nd set of intermediates/semi slicks!!!??
Ciao,
Johannes E.

It looks like a great tire and more importantly offering nice sizes for our cars where Michellin and Pirelli do not. It cerainly looks very usable in the wet.
