Default Cost of shaving tires?

What does it cost to get tires shaved? I need to replace a single rear tire, and I'm considering having 2/32nds shaved off so they'll be even with the remaining good tire.

Tire Rack says they charge $25 - $35 to shave a street tire, but 2/32" might be close enough to the other tire's tread depth to forgo shaving the new tire.

Yeah, I just can't decide what I want to do. It's the Pirelli PZero, which I think only comes with 8/32nds from the factory and I'm at 6/32nds now. I've read that tires should be replaced at 4/32nds if you plan to do any driving in the wet, so I'd basically be shaving away half of their useful life.

I'm just not sure how sensitive the 911 is to this amount of tread-depth difference (2/32nds). In my previous car (Honda S2000), even if the tread depth was the same, a 2psi differential in air pressures would cause the car to squirm sideways under throttle. I'm just not sure if the 911 is as finicky.

According to Tire Rack specs, the Pirelli PZero (Maximum Perfromance Summer tire) for Porsches comes new with 10/32" tread depth. That would make a 4/32" difference between your current tire and a new PZero. That's enough to shave the new tire, or even buy two new tires instead of one.

In such close calls, I try to make the choice that would ease my mind the most. In this case that would mean also considering how old the remaining tires are, and how much tread depth still remains on the fronts. Even a shaved new tire would have more flexible rubber than the older tires have. If the tires are over three years old, I might even decide to buy 4 new tires; getting the Michelin Super Sports that I've been wanting to try.

Tire thinking is a lot more complex than it used to be.

We do it to 4/32nds for $15, any other depth for $25. Any tire we can do, and our equipment is custom made and the best there is. Call me if interested. Thanks.

Slight correction... for some sizes the tread depth is 10/32", but for the Porsche sizes, they're 8/32". I'm not sure why they're different, but that's what the spec sheet says.

I looked at the Tire Rack spec sheet for the Pirelli PZero again and still see only 10/32" of tread depth for all the designated Porsche tires. I see five Porsche (N0 or N2) tire sizes in 18" and 19" diameters; all with 10/32" tread depths. What am I missing?

I didn't realize that the standard PZeros also had an N-model. I was actually referring to the PZero Rossos. Rear tires 295/30ZR19.

Thanks. That's good to know. Maybe I'll cancel my brain transplant operation.

Well, don't let me talk you out of that, if you really had your heart set on it.

Anyway, sorry for the confusion. I wasn't clear in my original post, and I didn't fully read/comprehend your post where you specifically stated the model of tire you were referring to. I gotta work on my communication skills.

Thanks for the feedback!
