That's how I have done it a couple of times now. Also, if you have old carpet or underpad, this works very well in protecting the face of the wheel.
I normally do as follows:
Layer 1 - Underpad or bubblewrap
Layer 2 - Carpet - pile side in
Layer 3 - Cardboard circle
Layer 4 - Stretcwrap
Layer 5 - Tape
