Lasted only 5k miles? Holy crap, just how bad was the rear alignment?! I'm no tire expert, but doesn't that sound like camber issues as well?

Sounds like toe-out (caster).

Toe is toe. Caster is caster. Not the same. Aside from that, yes, toe-out would cause wear on the inside edges.
