Default Tire Question (premature wear due to alignment issue)

Wifey had new tires ( Yokohamas) put on the A4 last October at Discount Tires, always been happy w/them. Tires are guaranteed for 60k miles. Yesterday she gets a flat. I go to help her change it and see both rears are bald on the inside down to the cords. Obviously her alignment is way off. She's just called from Discount Tires ( upset ) and they're making her buy new tires.

If the alignment was that far off, wouldn't they be obligated to say something to her?

And if not, shouldn't the tires be guaranteed no matter how bad the alignment?

Nope, sorry. Alignment is an owner issue. Heck, look at the alignment on the rear of carreras........... and that is OEM!

An alignment check is a separate maintenance action from mount and balancing tires. If you didn't ask for it, they don't check it.

Nope. Bad alignments can destroy tires, so they won't cover them if it is shown your alignment is that bad.

Obligated to say something? No, but it would be good business to do so if they knew of an alignment problem. Then again, how would they know or anticipate an alignment problem?

On the warranty, it depends on what the warranty says, but I'll bet it says something about "normal wear", which this obviously isn't as you've pointed out. I don't think it would be reasonable for the tire company to assume liability for one's maintenance issues.

Why, exactly, are they denying the warranty claim?

I guess it depends on the small print in the warranty.

The alignment was off when they put the tires on.

Say, when we notice they're going bald, we get the alignment done. Then bring it back to Discount Tires to honor the warranty.

The warranty off their website:

The mileage warranty of a tire indicates the number of miles that a tire is estimated to last. If a tire fails to last for the number of miles indicated by the warranty, the customer will be given credit toward a new tire based on how many miles short of the estimate the tire fell. Some restrictions apply.
They must have alignment specs as a restriction - oh well.....

If you only ask for a mount and balance, that is all you will get.

Chalk it up to a learning experience.

You can't seriously expect them to cover your mistake.

I'm sorry, but it's not Discount Tire's fault that you don't have a proper alignment on your car, which caused premature tire wear. That's your fault for not properly maintaining your vehicle.

Oh, and tire manufactures NEVER will warranty a tire because of abnormal wear if its caused by your alignment. However, if you talk to the right person with Yokohama they may make a deal with it. Happens all the time.

Maybe I'm not reading this correctly but, if you knew the alignment was off when you were getting new tires, why didn't you have them do the alignment at that time?

How long did the previous set of tires last? Both tires going so quickly and consistently on both sides sounds suspect. Somethin' doesn't add up here. I wouldn't be going back to that place.

I didn't know the alignment was off. I would've had it done if I had.

Discount Tires doesn't do alignments, at least not this store.

Tires lasted five months, about 5k miles.

It's no big deal, she's just pissed.
