Default BBS RS's dissasembly

Anyone take the 3 piece BBS wheels apart, if so what tools did you use etc.. I am considering respraying the clear on the rims myself...

Probably stupid, but I would like to investigate it.

I do a set long time ago, to remove the bolts, there is a special socket that you will find in almost any major auto part with 12 faces. when you are taking them apart first do one bolt from one side and another for the other side until every bolts are out, do the same when put them back together, this is very important so you get no air leaks.

The bolts are one time use, so get aome new ones when you rebuild them

BBS does not recommend taking them apart.

Not trying to hijack the thread.

Who sells the new rim bolts and where can you find the 'socket' online? I have a air leak on my 3pc rim.

BBS won't sell the bolts or tools to anybody (us included) because taking them apart throws the wheels out of spec. and they don't recommend it. Putting them back together takes specific torque settings that if not done properly will likely result in an out of round wheels. Two piece wheels are not as finicky as 3, but still require special training and tools to do right.

I just got a set of bolts from him.

The tools I needed were an 12pt 8mm socket and scotch brite pads to clean up the rims.

www.ccwheel.com has some good videos on how to do it.

Yeah, I posted the CCW link awhile back.

Thx- HP18 Will email him once I mount the tires onto new rims. I trust my experience in engine work to be able to torque the rim halves back together properly. Worse case is, I'll send it off to 'Rite Way' in Walnut Creek to have it professional done for me.

Just to make clear, are you speaking of the RS-GT 2 piece, or the older RS 3 piece wheels like these?

I contacted BBS on this this afternoon, here's their answer:

The hardware we sold him was through the Racing Dept. and was for Racing wheels… not street wheels and the street fasteners are different.

We have re-assembled wheels for customers that have taken them apart, but we will not ship fasteners for street wheels.

We will also not re-assemble wheels that have been modified or repaired. We also do not recommend that anyone powder coats our wheels in the aftermarket. Too many times we have seen structural issues with heat treated wheels being altered during the baking of the powder finishes.

I just had mine rebuilt by BBS. They are expensive wheels, and I recommend that you send them back if they need to be rebuilt, and get it done right, with all new hardware and gaskets. Just my $.02

plan on using some helicoils and a lot of silicone. I like to use a wire wheel to get all the old silicone off...not taking them apart is BS.

I'm not sure how different the race wheels are from street wheels, but I've taken my apart and rebuilt them several times to replace cracked wheel centers or split wheel halves. As hp18racer says, it takes a 12 point 8mm socket. On mine, there is a gasket and no silicone is used to seal them.

Anybody know what BBS charges to repaint the wheel centers?
