Default "New" Kuhmo V710s- any info?

A SEMA press release (quoted at the bottom) alerted us all to a "new" version of the V710 tires. From what I can gather thus far, they are supposed to have a square shoulder, different compound, and be available in a number of new sizes as of January. There is also a W710 coming Q1 2008 in a number of sizes.

Since this release I have not seen many specifics. A call to the tire rack claims that they have never heard of them. After putting the "old" V710 on special, the tire rack is now expecting shipments of at least the back-ordered 315/35/17 in a few days. Are they these the "new" or "old" tires, I wonder?

I have seen, from someone who seems to have driven them, that the "new" V710 requires a different setup (camber and pressure) than the old. It would seem you wouldn't want to mix and match them.
An E-mail to Kumho motorsports went unanswered...

If anyone learns anything new about the V710, please chime in. I'll be putting these on when they become available- any info as to when that actually is, or what setup to use, would be much appreciated by all I expect...

The original info I saw:

November 1, 2007
Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc. is not only adding eight sizes to its Ecsta V710 D.O.T.-approved competition tire, but also revamping the line, at least a little.

It was time for some changes, according to Motorsports Manager Rudy Consolacion. "We didn't reinvent the wheel. We simply tweaked the compound and construction to improve the tire's (dry track)performance."

The V710 features an asymmetric tread designed using a slick tread surface with two circumferential grooves on the inner half of the tire. The grooves are molded at 4/32nds of an inch, so the tire does not require shaving.

The V710's radial construction includes two slightly angled polyester carcass plies and two lightweight steel belts reinforced by a circumferential nylon cap ply.

The new V710 will be available in January in 25 sizes. The eight new sizes are 305/30R18, 345/35R18, 225/45R17, 225/40R18, 215/45R16, 245/45R16, 215/40R17 and 335/30R19.

Kumho also introduced a D.O.T. competition tire intended for wet conditions. The W710 is based on both the Ecsta V710 and the company's "wet" tire used in the American Le Mans Series, the Japanese Grand Touring Car Series and Formula 3 competition.

The W710, which features a slightly softer compound than the V710, will be available in the first quarter of 2008 in the following sizes: 205/50R15, 215/45R16, 265/45R16, 275/40R17, 305/30R18 and 335/350R19.

From reading up on the W710, it is my understanding that the V710 is not discontinued.

The W710 will be an available as a rain (wet surface) version of the V710.

Here's what we know to date:

Kumho has provided some additional information.
The new Ecsta V710 sizes announced at SEMA will trickle in during the course of the summer. All new sizes will have a slightly different shoulder profile than the current tire, with a more squared off shape and sharper edge in the shoulder area.

A real performance change to the tread compound (and possibly construction) is in the works, but won't happen until late 2008 or probably 2009.

There was a small change to the tread compound beginning with production date 4806 (December 1, 2006). This change was to maintain a consistent level of performance even if sources of raw materials changed. There is little to no net performance effect from this change.

We have a number of sizes that are still being supplied by Kumho with late 2005 and early 2006 production dates. Kumho motorsports has confirmed that age prior to first use has very little if any effect on the tire's performance. The clock starts ticking once the tire is used for the first time. There is plenty of anecdotal information to support this on some of the various forum threads.

We have received a photo sample of the new Ecsta W710 wet tire. Size line up, pricing and availability are still TBA.

I'm thinking about a set of these to put on my autox wheels. Thing is I want to drive to the 2 courses close to me on them. One course is approx. 30 miles and the other is just over 100 miles away. Is this too far? Will I cook the tires on the 100 mile journey?

I drove my V710s for many, many miles, including PCA tours in neighboring states.

Damon @ Tire Rack (a Rennlist sponsor) was helpful and I ordered the tires through him. Against his advice, I did not have the tires shaved or heat cycled, so I started using the tires with full tread.

The heat cycling was done just making short 20-30 miles trips. While there is probably a better way to cycle them, this worked for me. They lasted for two AX season (12 events w/ two drivers/event) and they were a significant contributing factor in taking men's (PO3) second and ladies (PO3) third place @ PCA Parade-Charlotte AX. I'm pleased with the mileage I got off them.

Driving the V710s to events @ 100 miles will shorten the life of the tire and if possible, I'd use the street tires and change them there. Driving to the 30 mile events I'd think they would be OK.

Talk to Damon, post #3.
