Default Sumitomo HTRZ III's on a 996 - anyone have'em and like'em?

Hi all,

Looking to replace my rear 18" Pirelli Rossi's 285/30 on my 996. Am looking for a quieter tire. Anyone have these Sumitomos and like them? I wasn't really looking at price until I saw how much cheaper they were.

The Test Results look pretty good. The Sumitomo HTR Z III's beat out the RE050A, ContiSportContact3, and Advan Sport. Pretty cheap too.

993 Sumitomo HTRZIII thread

I've got 4 track days and about 1500 miles total on them in 4 weeks and have been very happy with them. I drive a 96 C4S.

I like these, I put them on my 2002 996 3 weeks ago

295/30 R18
235/40 R18

These produce less noise the my old Continental Sport Contact.. The ride feels a little softer and this works for me because I don't track the car..

I went with a larger diameter to offset the speedo error..

Lastly the best part.. the price $730.00 installed including taxes.. My Continental Sport Contact cost 3x more and only lasted 20k miles..

Just installed a set of 18" on my 928s4, 225/40 front 265/35 rear. Only about 200 miles, so far, The ride is good, they are quiet which is good. Haven't driven in rain yet. Which is a concern for me, I have had some tires in the past that were terrible in the rain. Good Years in particular, bleh!

Hopefully they last,10000-15000 miles, if I can get that out of them, that'll be fine with me. For the price, seems hard to beat.

Tracked the crap out of a set that came with a set of wheels. 5 track days and 20 plus heat cycles and they still had over 3/32 left. Performed very well.

Got a set about a month ago. Great grip on dry surfaces. Very quiet (I suspect because of a softer side wall than the N rated). Not too much rain yet in Portland so no wet surface info yet.

i went with Toyo T1Rs all around after i posted because they were immediately available. mind you my pcar is a slushbox almost daily driver. the Toyos are much quieter than the Pirelli's i replaced and soft. my bet the Toyos are closest to the Sumitomos in price and driving characteristics. oh well... i have what i have till next time.

These are great tires regardless of the ridiculously low price. Good in the rain too.

Thumbs up

I'm going to buy my next set of street tires from you just because of your signature photo.

I bought a set from Damon that I put on my 996tt (now sold). I thought they were great. Respectable performance on the track but I was most happy with them on the street. Can't beat the price. If you are going to street>track, great value.

235/40 R18 & 295/30 R18 - just got them for my 996 GT3 stock wheels. Looking for race wheels to mount Hoosiers on. Will be selling my Enkei race wheels I had on the Cayman S (8.5 x 18 & 10 x 18 - very light!). Anyway, will try the Sumi's out for rains since the car will be set up for track only. Corded my previous streets and didn't think far enough ahead - wish I would have gotten Hoosier Wets. Next time around.
