Well-Priced Lightweight Track/Street Wheels
Hey guys,
In my local area where we have a significant PCA presence, I have run my BMW at many track days and autocross events. I have several sets of wheels made by a company called D-Force. They only build BMW wheels for race/street use at presentand are tremendously good value.
For BMWs they are offered in:
17x9.0 - 16.6lbs - $259
18x9.0 - 17.7lbs - $299
18x10.0 - 18.7lbs - $309
They are available in 3 colors:
Silver
Anthracite
Black (Polished Lip)
I am working with the US importer of these wheels to get some more sizes for BMW, and I realized that a lot of you have asked me how you can get these wheels too as they are lighter and significantly cheaper than any Porsche option available. So the question is if they were available in a staggered Porsche offset and bolt pattern in similar weights and pricing, would you be interested?
If you could only have one set of 17" sizes/offsets and one set of 18" sizes/offsets what would they be? Is there more of a market for narrowbody sizes?
Looking forward to hearing your feedback,
Mark

I have from another Porsche forum:
on 18" wheels, 50mm front 8 wide and 65mm rear 10 wide are the factory offsets. It would make sense to offer an 8.5 front and 10.5 rear so we could fit a 245/40 front and a 285/30 rear.
On 17" the factory offset is 55mm all around with 7" front and 9" rear but here it would make more sense to have at least an 8" front and a 10" rear to fit up to 275/35 back there...

I like the look and weights, and would be interested.
For the 987 Porsches (newer Boxster S and Cayman S) popular aftermarket forged wheel sizes are 8.5" fronts and 10" rears (OE sizes are 8s and 9s for 18" rims, and 8s and 9.5s for 19" rims). The 18" rims may be more popular among those doing track events. Offsets for the OE rims are 57 mm front and 43 mm rear.
I'm not so sure about popular forged wheel sizes for the 996 and 997 (later 911s), but I think they might be 8.5 fronts and 11" rears. The offset for the front is similar to the 987, but the rear offset is greater.

You may do well by making these in 944/951/968 size's 16" 17" and 18".
There are alot of these cars doing DE and autocross.
Besides most 944 owners are always looking for something
"cheap"

Hi Mark,
Looks like excellent deal. Are they one piece forged wheels? Where are the wheels made? I assume we can use our own centre caps.
I may be interested in a set of 18" for fitment onto my 997S. I believe 18x8.5 front with offset of 50, and 18x11 rear with offset of 65.

There is some info on the construction methods, etc. These wheels are in use on a huge variety of autocross, track, race, and street cars and have not had a single report of a broken wheel since they were introduced as far as I know.

What sizes and offset would you need?
I'm trying to gather info from everybody so I can see which sizes would cover the most applications.

These are good sizes and offsets that would fit a wide varity of Porsches.

David's right. I think those would be a good start in order to fit a wide range of Porsches. If you wanted to be a little more aggressive on the 18"ers I'd make 'em 9" and 11" wide. I really like that "metallic black" finish.

So if we were to offer 6 sizes...
17x8.0 +50
17x10.0 +60
18x8.5 +45
18x9.0 +40
18x10.5 +63
18x11.0 +65
Could you build the combination you wanted?
If we were to scratch 2 of those wheels what would they be?
Are the offsets close but not quite right for a particular offset?

Mark: Just in case anyone ever asks, the plane taking off behind #67 in your photo is a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog (a 305 in civilian clothes) that served long and well as a favorite observation plane in Nam.
And now back to our regular program.
