Max tire size for 944 Turbo S question
Hello,
I am looking to increase the contact patch for the front and possibly the rear on my 88 turbo S. Currently, i am using the hollow spoke techno II wheels from the 996 twin turbo and so far so good. The front is 225/40/18 with a 52mm off set and rears are 295/30/18 on 67mm off set (i believe these are the correct off sets for frt/rr). What is the max tire size that i can upgrade on the fronts and the rear i think i can go up to 305s? Anyone with a set of these on their 951 S? Your thoughts are appreciated.

The 951 comes with standard 16" wheels w 65mm offsets. You should get what we refer to as 'tramtracking' in Australia. Do you find that your front wants to dart around with irregularities in the road surface? They sound like awsome wheels but I wonder if there is any sacrifice in road manners?

I think your car is probably similar to my 968...
If that is the case, then I can tell you that I use 265/35/18 and 295/30/18. You may be able to get 305's under the rear, but it will be tight I think.

I checked the off sets again today and it's 50mm at the front and 62mm at the rears. No trouble with tracking or vibration although the fronts tends to dart around on bumpy road. I do want to go to a little larger size tire on the front to neutralize the back a little.
Jason- do you have a pix of your set up and what is the off set for your fronts, wheel size to allow 265s?
Thanks,
Duke

I run 245/35/18 295/30/18 with 8.5 et 50 10 et 60. No problems at the back, but my rh front does touch a little, but only cause of a PO's bingle. I dont think I could get any wider on the front with this offset, but there is room.

Good information, thank you all.
Thingo- Sounds like we have similar off sets. If you just have a slight rub then i should be able to run up to 245s with a 45 aspect ratio in the fronts on my 8in wide rims with a 50 et. Yours is 8.5 so i am safe in doing so, i am assuming of course. That's serious rubber for a 10 wide rim...but i like. As for the Micheline ps2, what is your take on them for wet/dry use as well as wear? I heard they have a better side wall strenght than the pirellis. I am really contemplating on switching to them once my Pirellis are gone.
Jason- My PM is: duke_premier2004@yahoo.com
You must track your car- or it is a street set up? Can't wait to see some of the pix, 265s in the front is just sick! I mean, you must be a brave soul driving around in NY with that set up.
Thingo, if you could post pix of your set up that would be great!

These pics aren't that clear, but really I think I could go et50 on the rear.
Mine is 245/35 front. As I said I only have a minor rub as my rh front guard is slightly 'misshapened', the liner doesnt sit in the right place, you should be fine with 8". I am hoping to use 265 with my track tyres, but I think I may need at least some negative camber.
I can only compare the PS2 with 16" T1-R, so sidewall etc is a different issue.
Comfort wise they are surprisingly good.I had tramlining on 16's anyway, you have to pay attention.295/30 was closest to stock diameter, fit easy.
Jason I too am curious on what offset you are using.

I didn't remember to tell you that I'm running a pretty serious amount of negative camber...Sorry.
I've got 3 degrees up front, and I think it's 1.5 degrees in the rear.

thingo,
Nice set up buddy. I usually see those rims on imports only...must be a pain to keep clean. Yours is street as opposed to Jason's so that's a big difference in keeping the fronts at 245- at least for me that's acceptable.
Jason- how about those off sets for the guys?
333- Is that you I see on the 951 board planning on a show down against ST?
I jsut got some guages this past week and now looking for a boost controller device- any thoughts? I've got WF HG and upgraded FPR already as well as a APE MAF, Tials WG SFR 3" etc...
Off topic a little...This weekend was nice- did you folks do any serious driving?

Compared with fuchs the enkei are easy to clean, I do like the japanese wheels, am looking to get some Volk Racing TE37 as these will end up as track wheels, even lighter though not as much a bargain as the enkei.Would prefer 55 et in the front in an ideal world.
I have the apexi, I like it a lot but it is a little fiddly to set up, but being able to adjust the boost for each gear is very useful, you can compensate for the reduced boost in first and second.the only other one I considered was the blitz, but I would run it with the companion unit as gear based boost is very worthwhile. Not real cheap though.

I think i have 55 mm off set in the front as well- I have 5mm spacers on each side which helps pushed the wheels out flush with the fenders. So if i go to 245s from 225, i might have to remove the spacers to prevent the side wall from sticking out beyond the fender? What about 305s in the rear with a 60 et?
thingo- why don't you sell me the apexi and you get the blitz? Does apexi have an overboost protection and a valet mode? Just for street use and 17-18 psi of boost, would you recommend a mechanical one?
