Question 18" Twists Chromed

A local guy has a set of rims for sale and I might be Interested. they are part # 993.362.134.07 (for the front) they are 7.5x18 fronts and 10x18 rears. front tires are still good but the rears are bald (how does that happen? ) any way the fronts are in perfect condition and the rears have some curb rash. one spot is so bad the chrome is chipped off. about 1cm^2 . what do you guys think I should offer him for them? provided they are straight.

If they are off a 911/993, it's normal for the rear, drive wheels, to wear at about 2X the front.

The more generous you are with the accelerator the more it happens with 944's too.

If they are hollow spoke turbo twists and not the solid spoke versions, run away, run away! Chroming hollow spokes is asking for trouble.

It happened at speed. The tire just got a really, really bad vibration while driving at highway speeds. And I heard stuff in the tire when I would be driving slowly.

Fortunatley, nothing happened. But you could imaging if the crack was at a different area, causing the wheel to lose air or break completely. Especially scary since I usually drive on mtn roads with little shoulder.

I think if you chrome solid spokes, that would probably be ok. Just use a good quality chromer who knows what they are doing and knows how to restore the strength to the chromed wheels ( or at least minimize the strength removed from the wheels. )
