S. CA Timing belt Party!
#168
Um, guys, I have a serious problem; when I arrived home last night, found my car on a tow truck - I had loaned my 944 to my roommate, and the clutch went on him. He was going like 70-80 on the freeway in the fast lane, I'm thankful he didn't wreck it.
So, um, anyone up for helping me replace my clutch? My mechanic almost got killed last week in a car wreck, had an arrangement for him to do it, but he can't do it now, I don't think.
My roommate has offered the use of all his tools (including air) and his help in replacing it. I've been told it's a PITA when you don't have a lift.
Thanks, but unless my car gets fixed before the T-Belt party, I'm going to have to ask for a ride.

i did my clutch before and it's not much of a pain, it's time consuming.
do you exactly which part went out? coz when i replace my clutch i thought that was the problem so i bought everything, upon disassembling the only thing wrong was the bearing that the torque rod rides on, but i did it all anyways just to be sure.it's been over 2 years now since i did it. are you sure it's the clutch itself? if so, i still have my old one in fairly good shape.
and sorry to hear 'bout your misfortune.

Julie,
Wow, in my case, the clutch started slipping a little when climbing hills.
It's scary to have it fail on the freeway (presumably not on a grade)! What are the symptoms? Can it move under its own power at all?

I believe the rubber doughnut died. When the engine runs and car does not drive in any gear with prior clunking noises from metal hitting metal during accel and decel, its the metal welds giving away from the lack of rubber doughnut. I am willing to bet on it unless your roommate managed to strip the ring and pinion out of the transmission, which happens when you peel out or some abuse like that, not at 70 or 80 mph. But, I still think he was hotdoging the car. Never lend your car to other people unless you are willing to fix broken stuff.

Jonas, yes, John Anderson was supposed to do my clutch job, but due to his car accident, well he has at least one more operation to go...I'm worried about him, my car is at least safe in the garage. So he toasted his automatic 944!? What happened? That dude worries me.
Does John have all the help he needs? Anything we can do to help?
Legoland951, he said that he had to run over to Lowes, and no, I had him "granny" shifting my car...that's what he calls my babying the clutch. We have a ton of tools here, but I did inform him it takes longer than a few hours (like 14 hours without a lift?) to do a clutch job on my car...he just kinda gulped, and said pick the day, he'll assist. He does have some air tools, maybe not as extensive as yours, but we can move his car out of the garage and have plenty of room to work around my car, in the double car garage.
Due to the seriousness of John's injuries, I don't want to burden him with another 944 to work on, on top of 14 others.

Jonas saw the car, I'm still trying to get the details. He's lucky to be alive and walking and breathing, his car is totalled.
I may take you up on the seat, Socal.

John will be fine... i saw him last week... the car is completely totaled... he'll be alright.... just give him some time to get back up on his feet... I was just there last week.... I usually visit him and the shop about once a week... he is just bogged down with work and this little incident didn't help at all.... I am sure u all know what that feels like...

Should we get a few people to do the clutch at the same time? Hey Julie, I may have to bring Emma's car over to do a water pump along with the timing belt, etc. I got a used clutch disc with good rubber doughnut center if you really can't get a new disc with spring center. Its a lot of labor to put a used part in so maybe just buy the disc itself and not the $400+ kit for the clutch. I have a trailer too so keep that in mind.....
