I hate to give up this car -- I love it, but my wife needs something new to drive, so I am going to sell this and buy her something from the proceeds.

Thanks, Crabman. Actually, tomorrow I am taking the afternoon off to drive around to the car dealers with the wife. We intend to see what we'll get trading it in for something she wants.

Time was you were always advised to not talk trade-in on a car until you had made the deal on the one that you were buying. I think it's different now because we are so much better informed as to the market, both nationally and locally, thanks to the internet. I know exactly what a dealer wants to pay for my car and I know what we are likely to pay for the preowned cars my wife is looking at.

So, having said that, I suppose if I could sell it to a Rennlister for $40k I should be happy. I am changing the price in the first post to reflect that!
