I don't know too many that would have done that.
I'm sorry about your pup. I've been there a few times myself and have two aging dogs right now and will be there in the not so unforeseeable future. Here is some philosophy from a 4 year old perspective, why dogs don't live as long.
People are born so that they learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice. Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.
