Insurance for open trailer
So I have gone farther down the slope and now own an open trailer for my 911. No more nervous drives home after the DE on tires with bald spots and core showing....
What do I do about insurance on the trailer? I called Progressive (have a policy with them on my truck and boat) but after talking with three reps it appears I am the first one to call requesting insurance on a private auto trailer??? They have not been helpful.
I believe my state (Florida) requires insurance in order to register the trailer so any guidance from those that have trailers?
TIA

I have Liberty Mutual for my truck and house, was able to add the trailer as a separate item for about $75 a year for $7000 value. Of course trailer only, not the car on it. In NY I didn't need insurance to reg the trailer

In FL trailers under 2k # are bill of sale not title. If it is new, MSO, or a used FL trailer you won't need to weigh it but if it is used from out of state you will need to weigh it. I used the scales at the county landfill but truck stop scales work also.

Had a chat with USAA about this a couple of weeks ago. Liability coverage is extended from the tow vehicle policy. I added the trailer with separate coverage for theft, collision, etc. but wasn’t required to in North Carolina. I guess that is pretty typical for most states.

You may not need insurance in states to register it, but I am happy to have it. My trailer was just stolen on 9/2/22. With the price of aluminum and unsavory scrap yards, its a must. Replacing my trailer with new will cost close to $13k .

For incidents when towing the insurance of the tow vehicle extends to the trailer.
If your trailer is stolen or damaged when not connected to the truck (like in storage) then you need a separate policy for that. They are cheap and given the cost of replacement trailers nowadays I would spend the money for a policy. Mine is with Hagerty.

Yea as others have said while hooked up your regular auto policy covers it and what u r carring. U need to make sure u have enough coverage. I carry an extra $100k trailer rider through state farm for $20 a year. While on my property trailer is covered in my home owners.

I did get the trailer registered today. As Peter stated above, I did need to have a weight certificate ($13 from the local CAT Scales at the Pilot truck stop) but did not need to provide any proof of insurance. BTW - the CAT weight certificate appears to be well below actual weight - 670lbs on the certificate vs what I believe should be at least 1000lbs. The trailer was hitched to the truck when weighed so not taking into account any tongue weight....
After four different individuals at Progressive, I did finally obtain a quote for insurance - $250/year with $1000 deductible. Allstate wanted $219 every six months. I did check out Hagerty but after seeing the very high quote on my 911, I didn't call them to request a quote on the trailer.
Seems like the only benefit of insurance on the trailer is theft or comp/collision. I agree that it would be almost double what I paid to replace the trailer with a new unit (Trailex open trailer) so weighing the decision of whether or not to insure the rig.
Thanks for all the great feedback!
