I am curious if there are any good level 2 chargers out there beside the mobile chargers from Porsche….

  • Tesla Wall Charger - Gen2
  • Tesla Wall Charger - Gen3
  • ClipperCreek HCS40, HCS50, HCS60, HCS100
  • Leviton Ford EV Charger
  • ChargePoint home chargers
  • Tesla Mobile Charger Gen1 - 40 amps
  • Tesla Mobile Charger Gen2 - 32 amps
  • PMCC
  • PMC+
  • Several Public L2 chargers
  • Mustart
  • Audi Chargers (same as porsche)
  • VW chargers (same as porsche)
  • Blink home chargers
  • JuiceBoxx
  • GM EV Charger shipped with the Bolt (12 amps) I’ve used both 120v & 240v w//Taycan - charges fine @ 12 amps.

EVSE’s are very simple devices really - they only do two things:
  1. EV controlled relay for starting/stopping power flow - safety - no power flows unless plugged into the vehicle
  2. Report maximum AMP’s available to the vehicle so that it does not overload the wiring/breaker the EVSE is connected to
the reason that I’m personally disappointed in Porsche’s chargers is that they don’t provide a very reliable charger, they charge a lot for it (very very much more money than it should be), and it overheats, and it’s overly complicated for what it does, and it’s relatively big/heavy vs. the competition.

I recomend most any thing other than the Porsche EVSE for north america.

the design and goal of the J-1772 charging system is that EV charging is not vehicle manufacturer specific and that pretty much you can expect any EVSE to charge any other EV regardless of who makes the EV charger (EVSE) or the Vehicle (if it complies with J-1772 protocol).

In addition to what Dave listed, EVSEs can also do safety checks for things like ground faults on the supply side. Some that have plugs on the supply side also have temp sensors built in to the plugs so they can detect a poor connection before it melts the receptacle.

Clipper Creek has great reputation, and I've used them a number of times. They make a wide range of products. For my Volt, I use a Tesla unit - modified by cutting off the Tesla plug and replaced with a J1772 plug. That was done almost six years ago and works great. If I were to do it today, I'd keep the Tesla unit stock and buy a TeslaTap adapter.

Some really old EVSEs don't fully implement J1772 correctly. One in particular I know of came with early Nissan Leafs, and have compatibility issues with non-Leafs. But these were low power 120V units which I'd imagine would be of little interest to a Taycan owner.

2 Tesla Gen 3 on a 100 A circuit - allows for 40a charging two cars simultaneously. Use the Tesla tap adapter. Looks great and works flawlessly.

Same set up I have. We had two Teslas at one point. Now the chargers are used for our Taycan and Range Rover Sport plug-in.

I use a dumb charger - Grizzl -E, with the cold weather chord, highest UL weather rating for outdoor use. I never understood why folks spend $$ on smart chargers, when the car can control all charging aspects. It is a 50amp charger with settings that can go be set lower if required, either at the factory or in home by changing the DIP switch. It has worked flawlessly for me for the last three months - never a hiccup.

Using a Wallbox Pulsar Plus Level 2 charger connected to a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Charging at 40A speed at a max rate of 0.4 mi/min.

FWIW I'm using the Porsche charger and getting the same: 0.4 mi/min. (60-amp circuit with 14-50)
