We test drove the base Taycan today. It was an extremely harsh ride. My wife even asked if it has shock absorbers! I have had over a dozen different Porsches over the years and still have a 993 and a Boxster, so I know how they ride. We recently sold our Panamera GTS in order to go electric with the Taycan. I test drove Taycan Tubo S last year and I dont recall a problem with the ride quality. Our test ride was with the suspension set for comfort.
Whats up? Any thoughts? Our sale rep at Porsche said thats how they drive.
I dont recall seeing air suspension on the window sticker of the demo we drove. It did have setting choices in the menu, but no mention of air suspension. I had air suspension on the Panamera GTS and that car drove great.
Would the air suspension option tame the harsh ride we experienced?

Air suspension would definitely make a difference in ride quality and the base RWD car you drove does not come with it as standard. The ride setting you mentioned was almost certainly for PASM which is standard on the base Taycan with steel spring suspension.
FWIW, the 4S that I test drove (I have one on order) had an excellent ride and air suspension is standard on that model, just as it is with the Turbo S that you drove previously. I've not read a single negative comment on ride quality from anyone with an air suspension equipped Taycan.
Your sales rep was giving you a standard BS line; they don't "all drive like that".

Very good points above. If you must go without air suspension, which is magnificent, then only get the 19 inch wheels to improve comfort as much as possible.
In the end, remember, Porsche builds for handling first, comfort second.
Air suspension on the Taycan is magnificent. Very comfortable ride in soft mode thats even smoother than my S class, while having better body control even with soft mode and normal (raised) ride height than an S class in its firmest mode.
Ive never driven anything even close to how the Taycan combines magic carpet soft ride over awful roads with minimal dive and body roll, and no bouncing.
a low center of gravity (lowest in the Porsche product line)
PDCC
is a thing of joy and world class ride quality - there are only a handful of competitive vehicles in it’s class - it may not be technically “the best” but it’s clear in the group of “the best” and anything better is an entirely different type of vehicle purchase.

I agree completely - with 6K miles on my Turbo S in all sorts of driving situations, I have never experienced a car that combines this kind of ride comfort with handling and feel. I was just talking to people at my wife's Mercedes dealer, and said exactly what the poster above did - the Taycan ride is smoother and quieter than an S class, which up until this point had been my benchmark up to this point. I'm talking about the 21" tires and wheels as well. If you are experiencing a rough ride in the Taycan with air suspension, then something is very very wrong.
It's pretty much a given that the air suspension cars ride well based on all of the reviews. The question is does the steel suspension have poor ride quality? It would be really important to know that the steel suspension is a nonstarter if you want a comfortable ride. OP please confirm that it didn't have air suspension. I am surprised that they would order one without it.

Is it possible the car you drove still had shipping blocks installed? I've heard of dealers delivering cars with blocks in place. I only assume the Taycan would ship with these blocks on the suspension.

Looks like I should not have been surprised that they would order without air suspension as both of my local dealers have them in stock with steel suspensions.
