This is a very interesting experiment. It appears to have been based on highway (motorway in the UK) driving, so that probably minimized regeneration, but it is a good assessment of what long distance travel distances may be. The E-tron result is consistent with what Byorn found for his range test, right around EPA rating.
They compared them to the WLTP city range and most car companies share the WLTP city range only (except Porsche who was nice enough to share both city and highway). For most EVs city range is higher because of lower average speed and good regen. Most cars were down 20% compared to this WLTP city range but keep in mind this was a highway test at 45-60 Fahrenheit.
Now WLTP is based on real road test. EPA range is measured on a dyno.
Nissan Leaf is optimized for the city not for highways which explains the -8% difference between EPA and test. EPA highway test results suggest less than 200mi range 270mi*70%=189mi.
Tesla Model 3 is so far from its EPA rating (-16%) which makes me think they have a "defeat device" installed. EPA highway range suggests 423mi*70% = 296mi. It couldn't even reach that, let alone 322mi.
E-Tron: great, overachieved its EPA rating. EPA highway = 281mi*70%=197mi
eNiro: great surprise. it suggests Niro has very little consumption from accessories. it also has very low rolling resistance
I-Pace: this car doesn't have good aerodynamics (although a beautiful car) in the EV world, that explains the -4% difference. It's exactly at the EPA highway rating: 319mi*70% = 223mi.
Had my top of the line E-Tron a month now, I really like the car and would buy it again. Range is a non-issue, I only charge on average every 3rd day. And it's half the price of the Taycan, what is all optional on the Porsche is pretty much standard on the Prestige model, from the on-board-charger to insulated glass to adaptive cruise control and illuminated door sills. Porsche (yes I have one) makes you crazy-pay for options and Audi includes them.
$ 84K MSRP Prestige package and I was able to get $ 10K off to net to $ 73K, plus I keep the $ 7,500 tax credit. Taycan is superb, but its not worth twice the price in my opinion unless you just have extra cash to toss at it in which case, go fully loaded Turbo S and max it out !.
I love my Model X - but @manitou202 is correct - one of the best quality of the Taycan and eTron is how much better sound insulated they are vs. the Tesla products. The Taycan interior is joy given it's silent cabin. The insulated glass is included in the premium package on the Taycan - and the Premimum package has a pretty good assortment of items you're going to want anyways - so I don't see a lot of people skipping the Premium Package - but I could be wrong...basically get the premium package and you're good to go with the noise insulated glass…
The Thermal and Insulated Glass is probably the best option you could pick for a Taycan (and is standard on the Audi Prestige) it makes a huge difference in the E-Tron. It's whisper quiet in the car, even at 70 mph. Bonus too, the Stereo sounds so much better because its not fighting the ambient noise of the vehicle zipping down the highway. All you guys ordering Taycans should absolutely get it, skip something else if you have to - you want this feature.
confirmed - the difference in premium package items is a configuration difference between the 4S and the Turbo - the Turbo Premium package is also less money…

That's one of the most frustrating things with Porsche. My base E-Tron is more loaded than a Taycan Turbo. I would have gone with a 4S if I didn't have to add $30k in options to get the equivalent equipment as a base E-Tron.

Not just that, but it's also a fraction of what a Model X cost, which is it's direct competitor.
