Porsche is considering a hotter version of the recently introduced 2014 Cayman.
Andreas Preuninger, chief engineer of the new 911 GT3 said Porsche is analyzing the prospects of a more hardcore version of the Cayman and he said testing for a track-focused variant has already been done but a final decision has not been taken yet.
Since the 911 GT3 is available exclusively with a PDK, Porsche could decide to offer a manual version for its more potent Cayman for those who want more control behind the wheel. It's not known whether it will receive the GT3 badge, GTS or something else but most likely there will be a more powerful version.

I believe you, Bill. Given the cars you have gone through, it is very impressive and speaks volumes that you still have the CR in your stable.
I don't think AP was involved in the CR, someone correct me of I'm wrong. Given that he is involved with the cayman now, I wonder if something even more special than the CR is in the works. Perhaps something to keep those unhappy with the 991GT3 happy? Manual tranny, no 4WS, lighter than the CS....? If the 991 GT3 has been acknowledged to appeal to a broader customer base, maybe this special CR will appeal to a more narrow hardcore base? The cayman sales volume has never been great, so they don't have to worry about increasing sales volumes huge amounts like for the 911.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to me. Hear me out:
The 911 rear engine layout is inherently flawed. Porsche has done a great job engineering out the flaws, but they can only do so much. The RS 4.0 was the pinnacle of the rear engine platform. Porsche cannot introduce a new model that doesn't perform significantly better than the prior model. They are running out of cards to play with the rear engine, so now they have to resort to PDK only and 4WS in order to show off impressive performance number improvements.
With the 991GT3 showing off very impressive lap times, they have room to bump up the game with the Cayman significantly. This will capture the small segment that wants a simple, lightweight, and involving machine. They can 'hobble' the cayman by offering a slower manual transmission and 'cripple' it by not giving it 4WS. It will still be slower than the GT3, but the segment this special cayman is aimed at won't care. They will sell more Caymans than the prior generation. People will be happy.
Just some wild thinking...

Rumors of a Cayman based "baby Cup" have been floating around for a while now. This is just a logical piece of that puzzle. I really hope it happens.
An 8500 rpm revving 3.6l race engine with 6spd sequential in a Cayman chassis would be simply a dream come true.

3.8L 9A1 engine that makes 380hp (really makes 400hp, but it must have less advertised HP than carrera S), RS treatment in terms of lighter weight doodads, bucket seats (please), NO centerlocks, and sport suspension doesn't seem like too much to ask. Price point somewhere between 991 and 991S?

That would be a tempting car if they follow through with it. If it were as raw as the 997 GT3 with the right power and suspension bits it could be a serious hardcore street car with the ability to track and be competitive.
