Default How worried should I be about break in period on Spyder..

I have a question about how you guys feel about the proposed break in period on new or slightly new cars? When I got my Spyder, my salesman said not to exceed 4500 rpm for the first 2k miles or so. I would guess most engines are tested and broken in slightly at the factory, but what are your thoughts on this?

I followed the break in procedure exactly as stated in the owners manual. Did an ealy oil change after the first 1,000 miles. My Boxster is rock solid, and never requires oil between changes (6-7,000 miles).

It's probably fine but why not observe their recommendation?

There's a break in period?

I drove mine as per PCNA recommendation for the first 200 miles and then it was business as usual. If you have even the slightest concern you should follow the manufactures recommendation.

The recommended break in period is excruciatingly long and probably overkill but I followed it.

i dont have a sspyder yet, but for my other GTx cars i take it easy off the dealer's lot and usually hit 8000rpm before 50 miles.

True, but I purchased mine out of state (live in Illinois and purchased in Dayton, OH). Picked the car up on a Monday morning, and drove several places that week for work & fun. Got home on Friday with just over 1,000 miles. Took it on Saturday for an oil change. Than another 1,000 miles as per the owner's manual. After that, it was go time. And has been since.

Sqeaky brake pads bother me. I spent more emphasis on the brake pads than the engine speed. I went past 4,200 rpm a few times, but not by much, topping out around 5,500. But I was very careful with braking for the first trip home, which was 200miles. Did a few slow decel and cool down cycles.

I think a proper winter storage routine is more important. Before the winter, I had an oil change, full detail, ran the gas tank empty, filled it up, fuel stabilizer, inflat the tires, battery tender, periodic starts, etc, etc.

So is a Cup Car coming before or after the Spyder? Congratulations on finally getting the 4.0. BTW, I took your advice on getting CCWs for track wheels, they are awesome and John was a pleasure to work with.

If you ever want to work out a trade with your 4.0, let me know. The Spyder had a nice, gentle break-in period...

No track days before 300 miles.

Other than that, I do what the salesman said - 'drive it like you stole it'!
(even though that's the farthest thing from the truth given their prices! But 'buy it like you just got ripped off' doesn't sound as good)

Periodic starts are actually extremely hard on your engine - if you don't start it up and drive it until everything is up to full operating temperature, you actually are doing more harm than helping.
