I’ve had both, but they were my only two P-cars. The 996TT was my first intro to Porsche and it got me hooked. It was a Tip with stock exhaust and I sold it because the highway drone was an issue for me. I loved the power and the thought of owning an mezger engine made me very happy. I thought it was a perfect size and you can’t help but turnaround when you walked away. I took it on the same roads that I take my 987.2 spyder and it was very capable in the twisties. The 996 didn’t feel as heavy as my friends 991.1 TT.

I’ve only had the Spyder for two years but I’ve taken it on many more roads and more PCA rides than the 996TT. It really is a different experience. Whereas, with the the 996 I felt the power and insistence of the motor, the spyder just felt more engaging. The power is down on the 996 by ~100HP, but I don’t feel I miss it. I even stopped myself from getting a softronic tune since I don’t feel I really need more power. I am not a fast driver that tries to drive to their limits, though. In my PCA rides I started in group 4 then moved to back of group 2. I feel very happy there and feel great exhilaration and involvement. In the 996, I felt the car would justify needing to move up. In the Spyder, I felt at home in any group. I was just simply enjoying my ride. I bought the Spyder because it was a way for my wife and I to stop riding 2-up on a motorcycle, but it was just way more fun and useful than anything on two wheels.

Again, as a recreational driver, I was able to keep up with any of the 911’s in the twisties.

From a reliability perspective, there were a just a few more non-drivetrain issues on the 996TT. I was bitten by the hydraulic spoiler issue. The gas fill valve had me doing weird gas pump yoga at the gas station, and a few switches and roof problems hit me. But ultimately, it was the drone and tip that made me sell.

This is a very subjective question. I loved the 996TT but still sold it. I love the Spyder but am considering keeping it forever. But I don’t need more power. I use it for weekend mountain drives with my wife. I would take Zeus’ advice and see if you can try out a 996TT. You may find that car is what you need for the type of driving you do.

Congrats!

And yeah, don't be allured astray by the Speedster. I looked very closely at one, when for a drive, and was just not impressed. Again, we're into a goofy (IMO) HEAVY roof, and a much larger car with deadish electric steering. For me? Getting close to getting back into a Gen-1 Spyder. Just have to find the right one.

South? Unless you go Kangaroo Valley (not really Sydney)....

You were at Autohaus - so should go north - Up the Old Pacific Highway....But watch for The Highway Patrol - still a great drive at sane speeds...
