Default Dash Vent Removal Technique?

Say - anyone know the technique to remove these round dash vents? I'd like to remove then and throughly clean.

Thanks in advance...

I had to remove mine when I replaced my dashboard. I suggest you examine every other option before you attempt to remove them as the possibility of damage is high.

If you must remove them, you need to reach through the top of the vent and slightly lift the top tab and pull the top forward. The bottom has a couple of spring clips. It’s the top that needs to be released. NB The middle ones are difficult to release until the cables are unhooked. I’ll find some pics.

These are the tools I used.

Trim tool to lever the vent against the dash. Two pick tools to release the bottom spring tabs. Modified hex tool to release the top tab.

Indents the bottom spring tabs fit into

The middle vents would not come out any further than this until I released the cables. To release the cables, I had to remove the lower dash.

This image shows where the picks go in. You need two in at the same time.

The biggest challenge is the top tab. It’s the same thickness as the vent body.

You have to insert a tool through the vent louvres. Get it in the tab gap at the rear where it is most flexible, then twist the tool to pull the tab down, all while applying forward force to the vent so when the tab releases you can pull the vent out. It won’t come far because then you have to insert two picks into spring clips at the bottom. The vent can’t be removed without unclipping the cable attached to each.

I can’t advise you more strongly to leave them alone. Get a long q tip and spend the time to clean them that way.

Top tab

I used a thin hex tool and modified it to release the top tab. Even the fourth vent was a bear to release.

Guys - I thank you for your cautionary notes and I will stick with my long Q-tips and detailing spray.

As my wife lovingly reminds, not all of my ideas are good, some down right not good. I think this vent-removal idea falls clearly in the later. I'll let it quietly die.

Amazon Amazon

These would work too, I have a set I bought from Griots many years ago and they have come in very handy for small spots like vents. I didn’t see the Griots tool anymore, maybe worth calling to see if they still have it.

Wise. I see your car has leather. The vinyl dashboard is as tough as old boots. I expect a leather dash would show removal marks. Slowly slowly catchy monkey.
