So what you are then saying.... Since the exhaust is open after the headers, and anything before the airbox is open, I could add a turbo after the header and blow it into the air box opening and it would be legal ?

Just saying ???

There should probably be a rule clarification on this. I understand under the current rule writing it is technically legal, I see your point, although I don't feel that it is the correct interpretation of the way the rule was written, nor how it was intended.

Someone could do a test to check, but stuffing more air into the intake airbox would most certainly help power, especially at speed. Would it be significant ? Probably not, but it would be an improvement of some degree.

Anyone here ever heard of rules creep ? It's a slippery slope, be cautious.
Once determined to be legal by Walt then I will manufacture and start selling them.
I haven't seen them here in Texas but will be looking closer at cars at COTA for it.

It sure would also help to have it on the right side engine cooling intake.

I didn't write the rule, nor did I lobby for it to be included. Literally found it while bored one Sunday afternoon in winter and read the rule book. There it is in black and white, side scoop is allowed. So I made it.

There is some conjecture as to if it helps. Yes, I can see how it stuff's more air into the intake cavity. Some have told me me that it can serve to starve air at higher rpm's. I have no idea. For me it became a novelty as it seemed to cause other competitors to complain about my car. Except it says in the rulebook I can have it. I have never done the other side because my car doesn't run hot and I didn't want to create to much drag.

I have spoken with Walt many times on it. He agree's its legal. He saw it at the LRP race a week ago while inspecting my motor for bore and stroke (for the 2nd time this year). He gives me the same answer every time, which is that its bodywork and the rules say I can have it.

Your example BTW would be illegal. It falls under the 'if we don't say its legal, its illegal' rule.

If you can make them, Viking, do us a favor and let us know.
If they're illegal we'll take the heat.

Here is my custom made scoop.. A little different than what some of the other guys are running. I do not have any data or any idea if it helps at all but it looks pretty cool..

Default Ok ok

Now being serious, I'm working on a mock up and will have it at COTA hopefully, only a couple days to do it though and I still have other stuff to do as well.

Would people prefer it made of aluminum, fiberglass, or CF ?
Will probably do 3M adhesive tape plus a couple small rights to hold it in place. And suggestions or preferences ?
The one I am making for this weekend will probably just be metal for ease of a quick production but once I have this mold I could make out of CF or FG pretty easy.

I'm not seeing the purpose of this and seems like it would create more aero drag than it would offset by helping with air intake. Especially on long-straight tracks like COTA and Road Atlanta. The air envelope in the rear of the car is crazy important and seems like this would upset it.

My two oo

Oh my GOD, just drive the car faster. Can we all agree that the side scoop is boxster jewellery?

And btw Viking, your scoop is too big. Not an awkward personal comment.

The pics of the scoop I did were purely a joke.
I figured it was pretty obvious as I just had painters tape holding it on.

^ Was joking right back at ya. Can you make it even bigger? There must be a point at which the drag will equal horsepower

Default Cota

I'll be at COTA PCA CR this coming weekend, not sure which garage, I am supporting a customer in SPB and will be trying it out in his car. He has data so the plan is to try some sessions with and some with out and see what it might offer as far as additional mph at end of long straights. The prototype made up for this weekend is kinda ugly, but it should suit the purpose intended and allow me to determine if the additional ram air effect overcomes the drag.
