I think I have it. Those are two types of External AOS in the sump picture uses part # 996-107-080-54, which I had to dig a bit deeper for on Pelican.. So the only question is what 997 part are you talking about, the external AOS shown in Post #9? Doesn't look like it will fit..
I'll take a shot at explaining this one.......

AOS is external on top/side of engine. - that's the first, uninstalled part only picture. There is a Motorsports version of this external AOS, the Motorsports version is a 2 chamber larger unit, of which is referred to as the Motorsports AOS. Common upgrade on 996,987, and later 986's 3.2 motor cars, but I don't believe that I have ever seen one on a SPB.

Swirl pots, also referred to here as "SUMP air oil separators", which can be upgraded to later 996/997 ones, are located inside the engine, see pics with oil pan removed.

Make a little better sense now ???
Hope it helps,
Happy Holidays !

Got it. I'm going to replace all 3 with 986 parts, add a 2L deep Mantis oil sump kit, run it 1L below full on the stick which will still be 1L more oil than stock, and done (hopefully).

Gums - the stock Boxster AOS (air/oir separator) has been known to be overwhelmed with engine oil and load the intake up with it. I'm sure you have seen 996's and 986's blowing giant clouds of white smoke out the exhaust at the track before. While it can clear out it will end your session/race and possibly foul things up internally. There exists a "Motorsport AOS" that is more robust but it is not a quick or cheap fix. A "solution" is to run the oil a bit low, but that is not one I wish to test..

When you add to the AOS issue with the lack of sump and less than optimally designed system to keep the oil where the pump can pick it up, you have the "fix" for that with a deep sump kit that gives you up to 2L extra capacity, allowing you to keep it low on the dipstick but still have 1L more oil in there than stock. I am utilizing the Mantis sump kit for this very reason and I feel that the extra capacity is needed regardless of what AOS I choose to be sure the pump is never oil starved. May be a bit overkill but that's me.

I am also replacing all three of the parts used to keep the oil where it belongs. There are two "swirl pot" separators in the sump designed to put disaerated oil back into the system, and the AOS up top to keep oil out of the intake. Hope that makes sense to you..

That makes perfect sense, thanks for taking the time, it's the first I'm hearing about it and I thought I was paying attention! Not so funny because in 944Cup the idea was to run the oil a little OVER-filled.

I think that was to better lubricate the hole in the block the rod makes...

Hi Gary,

Kevin at The Porsche Specialist in Broomhall, PA has installed the motorsports AOS in the earlier Boxsters. Here is a picture from FB (although I'm not sure if it will work here):

Facebook Post

Here is the contact info for Kevin - I am sure he would be happy to provide some details of how he did it.

I don't run a Spec Boxster, but I have a 2000 Boxster S that I use for HPDE - I have the LN 2 QT Deep sump and I run my oil halfway between the top and bottom tick marks on the digital oil gauge and get no smoke bombs on 200 TW street tires (Hankook R-S3) and didn't get them the 1 time I ran with R-Comps.

sorry to bring this back up, but i got the smoke bomb coming onto the front straight at shenendoah this weekend. I cleaned the intake and added a home depot catch can to get a few more sessions in, but this seems to be a common thing. So it seems all I can do is replace the AOS (i believe it blew the diaprahm) and run the oil level lower?

I run NT01s but the rest of the car is stockish.

I *think* it was Ernie from Mantis that told me to stick with the OEM 986 swirl pots, which is why I ordered them, but could be wrong.. been a while.

^ I've heard use 986, 996, 997 swirl pots. Probably none of it matters since what the motor really needs is a dry/remote sump system!

In any case, we switched to 997 pots, Mantis 2 liter (biggest) sump, switched the AOS every season, and didn't overstuff.

I'm going so slow already that I can't become a rolling chicane

plan is as follows:

Moroso catch can
2qt deep sump with horizontal baffle
997 swirl pots (return tubes really)
new AOS plus spare.
run oil slighly lower

thanks folks
