Default Can Heated Steering Wheel Be Coded When car Ordered without one?

2024 Base 992, did a search but couldn't find answer. Purchasing a GT heated wheel, any chance this can be coded if the car was ordered without heated wheel?

You will need some additional work to make it work. A new clock spring with the appropriate wire. Coding via PIWIS is possible. @f4bones can chime in as he has successfully retrofitted on several cars.

@dixonk exactly right - need to replace the steering column switch unit that includes the "clock spring" (clock spring cannot be changed separately), and then add one wire from the steering column connector to the drivers side fuse box. Then code with PIWIS. This works for all 992s except the GT3 and GT3RS. The GT3 can be modified to allow for heated wheel, but the GT3RS cannot as far as I can tell as it has a different steering wheel controller for all the *****, and doesn't seem to recognize the heat command.

Thanks for the replies, regarding the steering column switch unit, is this something easy to replace once i have the steering wheel off? Order from Porsche? Should I just have the dealer or a shop do it?

It's an easy mechanical install, but you will need PIWIS to program new unit and set steering stops - i doubt the dealer will program heated wheel for you, but possibly. . .

Helpful info @f4bones - Thanks!
I'm looking at doing this...
I figure the parts I will need are:
  1. New GT heated steering wheel for a manual 992.1.
  2. New clock spring to support the heating element in the steering wheel
  3. A new steering wheel module that supports the heated steering wheel? I'm not sure what this is? - more investigation is warranted. Is this part of the clock spring? I need to review the schematics.
  4. A new wire from the steering column to the fuse box. That should not be all that difficult. I just need the proper color and AWG.
  5. PIWIS Programming. (I got that tool)
I am driving a Macan loaner with a heated steering wheel and I kinda like it. My 2022 992.1 is in for a warranty windshield adhesive replacement. Porsche wants to keep the car for 72 hours to let the adhesive 'set' before they release the car. I requested the new Matrix LED PLDS+ headlights I installed be aligned at the same time as the camera calibration.

Yup - just a bit of clarification:

Really, any heated wheel will work - you can adapt a PDK wheel to manual - rear cover only difference. You current steering wheel controller - IE the small box inside the steering wheel should work if you are just getting a "naked" heated steering wheel and transferring over your components. Ping me if you have specific questions on wheels - i have lots of parts . . .

The steering column switch unit is the most difficult item - you will need to find one that has the same features as your car - IE standard cruise control or ACC - plus heated steering. Yes, only one wire from the steering column plug to the fuse box - I'll send you some wire of the correct color and AWG as I bought a big roll . . I can probably crimp the connectors on for you as well so really easy to add the wire. . .

On the column switch unit, look on the porsche finder for a 992 that has the same cruise control and heated steering wheel options, then get the VIN - I can then get you a PN. Or search on ebay, but difficult to tell if they are set up for heating . . .they need to have the two pins on the front side smaller socket - the one located at about the 8 O'clock position - the main connector is at 12 . .

I have never heard of a dealership doing any aftermarket installs...but I'll probably been proven wrong.

Rather than doing all this work for heated steering wheel, wear some nice leather gloves!

For all that effort, the 992 heated wheel better be miles better than every other disappointing heated wheel I've ever had.

It's not, but it's nice on chilly mornings - I use mine all the time. Hard to say if it's worth the effort, but I enjoy the challenge of doing the mods, so for me, it's worth it.

I have a great relationship with my SA and dealer….they added many mods and pushed envelope on certain things….
I bought a heated steering wheel for my Panamera( bought brand new without heated wheel) and they said they couldn’t code it!!!

My most frustrating experience as a Porsche owner( also own a new targa GTS)

So o guess i should consider myself lucky!!!😂

If I can get a naked heated GT steering wheel, I can send it out and have it recovered and add the deviated stitching. Win!

The option of any GT heated wheel makes the used wheel selection route much broader, finding a used manual GT heated wheel is challenging. Good to know, thanks!

Will the steering wheel parts from a standard wheel fit on the smaller GT wheel? I want to convert from a standard wheel to a GT wheel. If I get a core GT wheel that has heat, can I move my standard housing(s), controls, backing plate, airbag, etc over to the naked GT wheel?

I have the VIN from my totaled 2024 992 that has the same features as the 2022 (less the GT wheel w/heat). I have used partslink24 to find compatible parts I let my subscription expire as I was not constantly using it. I have the VIN from the 2024, I would use that to find out what column switch unit it has vs the VIN from the 2022. Using that method I could identify the PN. correct?. I think that would work.

This sounds like a fun challenge..

Yes - the parts will transfer over - your manual back cover is the only difference between manual wheel and PDK . . all other internals are the same. Yes, find any heated wheel, and you can have it custom covered and stitched to whatever color / pattern you like - I have several shops that will do it for you if you don't have someone handy. Really a great upgrade!

Send me the VIN - I'll get you the PN. . .

I purchased mine from this seller. Very good customer service.

It happens to me as well. My 992.1 T black napa leather steering wheel has heated function. I bought another Alcantara steering wheel with yellow stitching with the same part number of the control unit. After the dealership installed the steering wheel for me, the heated function does not work. I have to swap my original wheel control unit to the new wheel and everything works fine.
