Taking Delivery at a Different Dealership

Taking Delivery at a Different Dealership
My SA is telling me that I cannot take delivery at my local dealer and must take delivery at his...he's at Porsche South Bay and I requested delivery at Porsche Newport. Not a huge deal just would be better at Newport to avoid the 100 mile or so roundtrip. This seems odd - you really can't take delivery at a different dealer than you purchase at?

I wasn't offered this option either, I am also purchasing at a "distant" dealer. Does courtesy delivery like this exist in the Porsche world? I know you can get it done with a Corvette.

Nope. You're buying it from a dealer not from PCNA. How is the Newport dealer meant to be compensated for their time and effort and the inevitable "no good deed goes unpunished" when the customer complains they found a cross threaded valve cap?

good way to get the break in miles started

You can always request a courtesy delivery to your local dealership, but both dealers have to be on board. I've done it twice and it has worked out great. I have heard there is sometimes a modest fee charged by the dealership taking physical delivery for you. But if the dealership you ordered the 911 from is saying no, I think that's the end.

Thanks all...oh well...get to break it in! It does seem like 10-20 years from now we'll look back on the dealer model as being so antiquated / inconvenient. One of the least customer friendly ways to purchase a consumer good.

I don't think I would do that even if it were possible as I am just a bit too fussy and cannot imagine what happens if you find a scratch, nick or a torn seat on/in the car at pick-up from the non-selling "dealer". 100 miles is nothing, enjoy your ride home in your new 911.

I have to drive home about 60 miles - but I have to drive through NYC to get home, which is no picnic.

Matter of perspective. I'd make an event out of it. Late dinner on a weekday then rip up/down the FDR. That'd be a real treat. But yea, IRL it could be a nightmare especially with a stick.

I had a 1k mile drive home and it was a great drive….and got my 2/3rds of the way through the break-in….

Why does this request denial seem odd to you? Is South Bay and Newport owned by the same dealer franchise? Except for Tesla, no car dealership in the US is owned by the manufacturer. They are all independent franchise owned unless they are owned by the same parent dealer group like Autonation or Penske and even then, each store has their own management and compensation structure. Yes, it's an antiquated and inconvenient business model that has been this way for decades. Here's a little history on the subject. https://www.justice.gov/atr/economic...les-car-buyers

Chevy dealers do courtesy deliveries on Corvettes all the time, because of the way its sold - I think only 8 dealers in the country move some huge percentage of all Corvettes. MacMulkin, etc.

It seems odd because I don't buy cars very often and historically it's been BMW who just generally speaking seems much more "customer friendly". Maybe because Porsche is a tier above who knows but the general experience has been the opposite with an attitude of "you're lucky to be buying from us". Not a ding on South Bay specifically ran into this attitude across other dealers. That said I bet if I was on my 3rd or 4th car from a dealer they'd make this happen. You'd think auto dealers would try harder but I doubt they will until they have to.
