Yeah... The roof is two separate pieces and allows you to run the car three ways:
Roof stored or Completely Removed from the Car:
Sun Shade Only- It's the primary top which in isolation allows sun protection with maximum airflow and intake acoustics. Can be used with light rain as well.
Sunshade with Weather Protector - It's an additional piece that is fitted under the Sunshade behind the Roll Bars. Only works with the Sunshade and provides maximum protection from inclement weather.
Most will complain about the "tent" roof, but the true diehards know it's one of the best features of the 987.2 and now the 982 Spyder RS.
I was very excited about a Spyder RS. But the more I think about my experience with a PDK version of the Spyder, the more I suspect I will get bored with the car after a year of ownership. I have a 718 GT4 RS and a 992 GT3 manual, and I cannot think of a better P-car combo at this moment for track/weekend drive purposes.
I guess I will take a pass on this round unless the configurator really slaps me back on my face.

I have the same pair. I added a Speedster to get the manual drop top GT3.
So, I have a 981 Spyder (my favorite P-car so far including 981 GT4, 991.1 GT3 and 991.2 GT3 Touring, none of which I still have).
I have a GT4 RS on order coming later this year.
Saw today’s reveal, and now not so sure Spyder RS is for me. Why? The roof…..
I assumed it would be same or similar to other Spyders, but I’m really disappointed Porsche redesigned it so poorly just to save about 15 lbs. Not only is it a lot more of a hassle to put up and down, but it’s NOT even watertight! Really more of an umbrella. Seriously!?
The PDK only is also a bummer. Was really hoping for a manual option.
I was thinking Spyder RS could be my one and only that would make it worthwhile to trade in the 981 Spyder and perhaps later resell the incoming GT4 RS, but alas, it’s not looking that way, at least not now.

You've misunderstood. All the videos are only showing the sunshade portion being put on. There's another section as well that seals off the back to make it fully enclosed, just like the regular Spyder.
Despite what they say, they didn't do it to save weight. They did it to fit the intakes up top.

ok. Please help me understand…. Are you saying there are two cloth tops? One the same as the regular 718 Spyder that works the same way as that, AND the special lightweight one they showed in the video? And, what, the “regular” one like the 718 Spyder’s can be semi-permanently removed so as to only carry around the more lightweight one they showed in the video?
if so that would be great, but I don’t think so. Here is another video where they show the new roof in some detail. No mention of anything else…
