997.2 2010 139K miles Carrera S M6 rwd cab

What is this sound? It only happens when I make a relatively sharp turn when the car is cold. I think it happens in both directions. If I go slower and it is colder, it will be louder, longer, and more annoying.

It does not seem to be the brakes, but I am not ruling it out. I think it is not brakes because it is more a function of wheel angle than brake pressure.

Any thought on fixing it?

In past cars, cranking the steering wheel hard usually caused some noise from the power steering if it was worn; usually from the belt or pump.

Does it do it after you've driven the car some or just when you first start it in the morning. If only in the morning, sounds like the brakes scraping off surface rust on the rotors that may have formed overnight due to moisture in the air.

If you can make it do it all the time, I think you may have a worn wheel bearing and the lateral loaf placed on the tires due to the Ackerman effect related to the front suspension geometry of the 911 is allowing just enough play in the wheel bearing for the pads to lightly scrape the rotor and make the squeak.

You can eliminate the steering system as the cause by turning the wheel from full lock to full lock sitting still and see if you get the same noise - that would point to the power steering pump. If it only happens when moving, it's a load based issue.

If you really want to freak yourself out, wait until it's really cold, find a dryly section of asphalt and back up at full lock and listed to the front end popping and hopping which is totally normal by the way - look up Ackerman effect.
