991 Turbo track car
This thread is intended to share your experience with track prep and setup for the 991 Turbo and Turbo S. The more we can all share our trial and error, the more we can enjoy tracking our cars. Three things: please be very specific but don’t drivel on, try to keep repetitive questions and discussions brief or in another thread, and please try to update as your car evolves. Since I get a lot of PM questions, I’ll start, but this does not mean I am the ultimate expert, just the thread starter. (Updated 3 Oct 2018)
Bio (for context): I’m a 55 year old serial entrepreneur in Virginia. I’ve got about 120 track days, BMW M School and Advanced M School, and a handful of AutoX experience with mostly FTD.
Tracks: VIR mostly (1:56.93), Watkins Glen (2:08), Road Atlanta (1:39), Dominion Raceway (1:29), Sebring (2:21) and Daytona (2:07). I run in the advanced solo group, and have done a little bit of PCA instructing but not certified.
Base car: 2017 TTS, sunroof delete, alcantera steering wheel, low options, GT Silver, MSRP $192k (Since this thread started, I've moved to a GT2 RS, but will leave this info as is to stay in context)
Interior: Cobra Misano 30th Anniversary sports seats with sub strap pass through and logo delete, Cantrel half-cage, Schroth 6-point harnesses, Aim Solo DL with Smartycam, removed rear seats, seat belt buckle blanks
Exterior: Rennline radiator grills, GT3RS rocker panel extensions, Awe Tuning Wind deflectors, Rennline front and rear tow hooks, Xpel clear wrap (entire front end, A pillars, and leading edge of roof) clear side light markers
Wheels/Tires: HRE P101 20x9 front, 20x11.5 rear in clear finish. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires 265f N2 spec/325r M0 spec, Camber 1.9f/2.0r for now.
Suspension: Techart lowering springs and DSCsport V3 box. Looking to improve front camber next.
Brakes: Girodiscs with Ferodo DS1.11 pads, stock calipers,Tarett Engineering caliper studs, Castrol React SRF fluid
Exhaust: Sharkwerks cat back
Battery: Braille i48CX Lithium Ion (10.5 pounds vs 52 pounds for OEM!) I now use the AntiGravity 40ah version, which I love.
Engine/Trans: stock
Safety Gear: Bell M8 Carbon helmet, Hans III with gel padding, Sparco Arrow gloves
Trailer/Tow vehicle: ATC Quest 405 22' enclosed trailer (fully finished/insulated interior with dual HVAC and power awning), 2018 MB GLS63

New 2018 Turbo.2 months old. Coming from a 2015 GT3.

Home Track: Sebring
Mods to new Turbo: GMG lowering springs, SRF brake fluid, OEM Porsche GT2 drivers seat, BBI roll bar, OMP Harness, Michelin Cup 2 tires. Clear bra full front, rocker panels and rear fascia.
Recent events: 1st AutoX last weekend. Usually FTD in my GT3, same results with Turbo. Torque is awesome. Car very toss-able. Weight not an issue, never crossed my mind. Run AutoX in sport, not Sport +. Sport+ too aggressive. Unsettles car in transition. Smooth is vital in this car. Sticks like glue. 30 - 31 psi hot on tires resulted in best times. Don't miss GT3.
This is an awesome car. Very capable. Surprisingly so. This thing is good! 1st track day coming up Nov. 17-19 at Sebring. Can't wait. Will report after.

Update: Since this post, I've changed cars. I now have a GT2 RS, and I purchased new HRE R101WL wheels for it in Brushed Dark Clear finish, and love 'em very very much.

991.1 Turbo. Steel brakes and no PDCC. I did not get a Turbo S specifically due to having PCCBs and I can take care of suspension later.
About 150 track days with various cars since 2004 (2 GT-Rs, C63, F80 M3, E92 M3, B8.5 S4, etc.), instructed w/ a few organizations, but only 3 track days w/ 991.1 Turbo so I'm pretty new to the platform but not new to racing. Competed in a few time attacks. DSC V2, Trofeo R and that's it. Stock everything else including engine tune, pads and fluid.
Car is very agile, it respects trail braking if done early enough. Gains traction with throttle touch and weight transfer to rear quickly.
So far, very impressive.

This is useful info. One of the factors holding me back is eventual loss on purchase price if I upgrade down the road or switch vehicles. Generally, what kind of trade percentage do you give on used wheels? Thanks!

There really isn't any set percentage. The condition of the wheels, the specs, and the market for them among our existing customers looking for in-stock sets all dictate the final offer.

For the Trofeo R's, what is your hot tire pressure. Thoughts vs Cup2?

As for tires, hot 35 front and 37 rear. I'll be doing two more track days on them in Dec and happy to report back.
Here is a few laps of mine that won 3rd place in unlimited AWD at Global Time Attack competition last month.

OK, first track days with my 2018 Turbo are done. Started with 1850 miles on the clock. Was at Sebring Friday and Saturday for annual Instructors weekend. Was nervous about the Turbo and all wheel drive on the track since I was coming from a 15 GT3, and never had an all wheel drive car before. Bottom line not to worry. Though different, and I still have a lot to learn about the car, in a word it was awesome! I drove very tentatively, but in my second heat I beat my personal best time in my GT3 by 4/10. Not a bad start. So, observations: To re-establish the parameters, my car has the following mods. GMG progressive lowering springs, Cup 2 tires, SRF brake fluid, OEM GT2 seat, BBI roll bar and OMP harness.
Two things stood out. Tires and brakes! The tires get hot and build pressure quick. I started out cold with 28/29 F/R but well before the first session was over the temps were 39/41. Not good, so I cruised. Back to the pits I lowered right away to 27-1/2 / 28. That seemed to be the ticket as hot temps maxed at 33/34. Brakes were another issue. I purposely ran the stock pads, but they really aren't up to track work IMHO. They worked, but pedal feel and initial bite leave a lot to be desired. I am going to change to GT3 pads this week. I found I had to brake way earlier than I normally do/did in my GT3. I get that it is a heavier car, but still. In fact my buddy in his 15 GT3 commented that he was afraid he was going to rear end me since we were so used to running our 3's together prior to my new car. That is really about it as far as any additional changes. The car is that good!
As to performance. This is a very fast car!! During back straight runs, 16 to 17, with my buddies in a 15 GT3 and 2001 GT3-C cup car, I would literally walk away! They were blown away by the cars performance. In fact, I had the same experience with a new GT3 RS. Yes, that's right an RS! The fact is the turbo is faster, hands down. Randyc151 was right. These new turbos can run with anyone. The car does not feel heavy at all. Very responsive everywhere. Anyone concerned about lowering springs....don't be. The car feels very planted, never bottomed or rubbed, gators included, and anyone that's run it knows that Sebring is a rough track.
That's it for my first track report. Not much to say because the car doesn't need much. I need to work on me! Still not pushing like in my GT3 but that will come as I learn it's peculiarities and I get more comfortable with the new car. This car is a match for anything on the track, for DE work, and in case I forgot to mention....it is really FAST!!

Great reporting! The stock pads have better bite than most others I've tried, but they do overheat pretty quickly and start chunking and flaking when they cool down. You have to brake earlier than before because it's a heavier car carrying much more speed.

Run in Black/Instructors group. Old adage at Sebring is that 2.30 or lower is quick for DE. I am running low 2.27's, consistent 2.28's. Goal is 2.24- 2.25. I don't push. 2.25's and lower is really quick. Best stock GT3 I know of runs 2.21's, but that's rare. From what you run at VIR you should be very fast at Sebring. In GT3 terminal speeds 16-17 were 145 and 147. I was consistent 151- 152 with best of 154. So much faster car. But like you said you have to slow it down. Let me know when you are going to be there.

Nothing permanent, but that's what I'm working on with my track friends here in Virginia. We are also doing Daytona in a couple of weeks.
