Talking 993ProjectRS - Ready to Shine!

It’s finally done. Or close enough to show its pretty face to the world.

For some time now I’ve been itching to re-create a 993 RS as close as possible given my budget constraints. I needed a C4 to begin with because of the hydraulic brake system with the larger MC and 4-channel ABS that it comes with. That is pretty hard to retrofit on a C2. And a '95 being OBD1 can be helpful down the road with future engine work.

The idea was to build a driver’s car, done right, but nothing too fancy, mostly for the street and the occasional track day... As some of you guys may or may not remember, I picked up a '95 C4 in March which surprisingly turned out to be in pretty poor shape. Over the past 6 months Pete and Nate at Knight Time Autoworks had the car completely re-done, and now there is no trace of the abomination this 993 once was. All the rust was repaired, all the broken pieces replaced, all the drywall screws, formica, plumbing wire, and shoddy wiring removed.

As things progressed and I saw the level of craftsmanship that was going into the car I decided to step up and make it really special. To that end I've steered clear of cheaper aftermarket replacements and have used as many factory parts as possible unless an aftermarket part was indeed the better choice.

Here’s a pretty comprehensive list of what was done, although I’m sure I’m forgetting a few details:

Body:
Full two stage repaint in Guards Red + clear coat
Sunroof delete
Headlight washer delete
Rear wiper delete
New ROW front bumper
New ROW rear bumper
New heat shields everywhere
RS Clubsport rear spoiler
RS Clubsport front spoiler
RS side skirts
New front windshield
New RS rear windshield
New rubber seals
ROW amber front turn signals
ROW amber tail lights
ROW turn signal repeaters
RS windshield washer reservoir

RS Speedline wheels (imported by Nurburger and used to belong to Mark D, then JPP, before heading up to Canada for a few years )

Newly refurbished Big Red brakes + stainless steel lines

Engine:
Stock 3.6, rebuilt by Exotech ~30K miles ago
Varioram intake system added (thank you for giving me the courage JM993!)
Custom Steve Wong chip for OBD1 w. Varioram
SAI delete
Cruise control delete
Heater fan delete
New engine fan
New spark plugs
New ignition wires
New valve and chain cover gaskets
New crank seal
New oil cooler
Dansk 100 cell cats
OEM LPMM mufflers
New battery
New A/C condenser
PadKeeper

Transmission:
FDM AWD delete kit (thank you Darin @ FDM!)
FDM RS short shifter & golden rod (thank you again Darin!)
FDM transmission mount (and again!)
Newish clutch & LWFW
New rear axles
Regear = ran out of money, will have to wait 'till next year.

Interior:
Radio delete
Rear seats delete
Unnecessary wiring delete
Airbags delete
OEM non-airbag center console + footwell lighting
OEM non-airbag lower dash & ashtray
OEM non-airbag glove box
RS carpet
RS smooth headliner
RS seats (Speedster) + rebuilt mounting hardware
RS steering wheel
RS steering wheel column cover (thank you Magdaddy!)
RS shift ****
RS center storage compartment
RS leather door cards & hardware
RS seat belt reel enclosures!
Red seat belts

Suspension:
RS front uprights
RS tie rods (w Elephant Racing spherical bushings)
RS tie rod ends
RS front strut bar
RS suspension bushings, front & rear (Elephant Racing Sport)
RS rear drop links
Rennline solid side mounts (subframe kit and tilt kit)
Turbo anti-sway bars
Rothsport steering rack bushings
Beefier steering brace
Bilstein HDs & H&R springs on their way to the garbage.

Coming up:
KW v3 (thank you Darin @ FDM!) + OEM RS front camber plates and rear shock mounts

Close to 400lbs were removed from the car so right now it sits a bit higher than it should but that’s about to change.

The pictures below are of the final result. I was planning on posting more but photobucket decided to start charging for hosting so I went on Instagram instead. There are a lot of details there if you want to see the progress. The link is in my signature.

Finally, I can’t say enough great things about Knight Time Autoworks in Argyle, NY. Pete & Nate are magicians and did an absolutely amazing job with the bodywork and mechanical overhaul of the car. Thank you K964 for the recommendation! This would not have been possible without your help. I owe you!

And thank you JPP for all the advice, wisdom, and banter! You helped make lemonade out of this lemon and turned the whole process into a really fun experience!

Enjoy guys!

WOW! That looks fantastic. I dig your thought process as I was thinking about attempting a similar project until a little baby decided to pop and ruin my plans lol

Great looking car! Inspiration for my own ride.

I'm pretty sure that radar detector wasn't a factory RS option...

Wow, Ilko - this is just completely bad-a&%!!!

You certainly paid attention to detail and the car looks incredible. Congratulations and best of luck with it!

On the down-side, you may have raised the bar for my dream of an RS tribute a bit too high...

Amazing! is that a factory RSD? I've been toying with the idea of doing the AWD Delete on my C4 to open up options but still haven't pulled the trigger.

Fantastic work. The car looks great now Ilko. I'm glad the varioram install went (mostly) smoothly and that you're satisfied with the results. You'll love the KW V3s, I've got them on one of my cars and they're fantastic, much better than Bilsteins (both HDs and PSS10) in my opinion. Looking forward to hearing about your regear results the next time around. You'll love that mod as well.

Cheers
Joe

Congrats on an awesome machine Ilko and thanks for the kind words!!! Photos do not do justice to the craftsmanship that went into your build. Your patience and faith were truly rewarded and kudos to the vision you had for this once sad sack of a car. Pete and Nate are incredible magicians who strive for perfection. Word on the street is that they are pretty good at painting guards red aluminum hoods too (hint....hint....).

Drive it in good health my friend!!!

It's a comfy highway cruiser, that's how it drives!

Initially it felt very different from my last 993. Lots of noises I wasn't used to due to the RS bits, just different overall feel. As I got more comfortable with the car I started to like it more and more. Just need the suspension to be addressed and have a set of new Michelins put on it.

Overall I t feels very light. That was the main goal. I was surprised how nimble it is. The engine pulls hard and sounds good. The steering is sublime, very precise. But with the current ride height and Bilstein/H&R set up there is a bit of floatiness that needs to be addressed. And I haven't pushed it too hard yet, still getting used to it. But the more I drive it the more I like it.

Wow! That turned out great!!! Congrats for such work.

Yes, do the regear, that will transform the car "power". I love my G50/21 (factory in my Carrera), is not that close as the RS IIRC but somewhat close to it.

Did you swap the DME for OBD2 to make it work witht he retrofited VRam? I would love to find a VRam syste and swap it into my Carrera 95's but unsure about the DME and wiring harness.
