I sent a message similar to this to the PO, but the problem he faces is that used 996 are going so cheap combined with the high cost of replacement motors for this car. It essentially makes the roller, no matter how nice it is, worth very little. I have seen and bought them for $4 to $6k myself. Then you end up dumping a ton of money into them, when you could have had a decent running driver for about the same money. The only way it makes sense (in my mind) is for the guy like me who likes to wrench as a hobby and has a decent shop. Paying someone to do it would be insane, from a cost perspective. My gut tells me I’d be shocked if you could get anywhere near $8k, maybe $6 if you are patient.

It would be a completely different situation if the cars were worth more or motors were available for anything resembling a reasonable price.

ok, screw it, I'm going with the solution over the winter...cant justify a $500 bearing (even if its LNE) taking out my $20k motor.

It's nice firing it up & driving around with ZERO ims concerns.

Sorry to hear this, but sure would be nice to know more details about the IMS bearing installed, who did it and when.
Might help someone else on the board

Edit - you thought about swapping the IMS bearing for something like the pelican cheap IMS bearing replacement, flushing the engine with something to try and get out as much metal as possible, a few oil flushes and filter changes and see how you do?

At this point if you think your engine is a write off anyway, you don't have much to lose by dropping a relatively cheap bearing in it, flushing and running?

Sure, I'll post the details when I get home. The shop said they could drop the transmission and see if they could get all the bearing debris out and install a new one and do a flush. Even if they were able to get it running again I would not feel comfortable driving it and if I sold it I would feel equally terrible if the engine failed on the new owner. Just going to suck it up, take it as a loss, and move on.

In regards to a partout, I wish I had the time. Between work, errands, and trying to keep up with a 2 yr old there isnt enough days in the week. The only things I could possibly take off are the wing, wheels, and sideskirts.

As long as you sold it with full disclosure and priced for the worst case scenario...

I can't possibly imagine how they could flush the engine of the metal chaff from a grenaded bearing and get everything out.

That sure smells like they're bilking you for labor hours.

I see three logical options: replace the engine, part it out or sell the roller.

Yea i agree, they said they've been successful before but I agree with you which is why I'm selling as a roller. Replacing the engine is not financially smart when the cost of a new engine and labor are 70% of what I paid to for the car.

I'm interested in the roller. It's a sickness I have... What are you looking to get? PM is fine.

Sorry for your loss, I'm sure that is a shop out there than can pick this thing up

Good Luck with than kitchen remodel, we did one a few years back and started with a 10-15 budget and we ended at around 30K.
