Default Replacement alternator shaft difference

Just about to put my new alternator in and noticed the shaft one the new one doesn't have a step in it. Will this cause problems? Do I have to purchase some sort of sleeve? The old alternator shaft looks like it's one piece, the steppes section cannot be removed.

Both are Bosch units with the same part number.

Yes. The circled piece is a spacer. You might have to soak it in penetrating oil, but it should slide off. It might take some convincing.

Are you doing single pulley conversion?
Good luck!

Thanks!

I think I soaked it in Kroil, or PB Blaster, etc, then I lightly grabbed the spacer with some vice grips with a piece of cloth over it so as not to mar it, then used the triple square fitting in the alternator shaft, and started twisting them in opposite directions. After a bit, it broke free and I could slide it off..

By the way, your "old" alternator looks pretty new, in relative terms. How old is it?

Got it off! Thanks guys.

No idea how old it is, but yes, it does look quite new. Surprised it went bad so soon.

I then learned that I dont even need that spacer for the single pulley conversion

If you had to ship a core back, you wouldn't want that spacer to go with it...

What conversion kit are you using? Rothsport's kit required the spacer.

Thanks!

Now you're worrying me. I'm using the rothsport one.

When I installed the hub with the spacer on it wouldn't seat far enough on the alternator shaft to get a nut on it.

Here is mine, doesn't show the spacer on the new one but I had to put it on, if I remember correctly it was necessary not only to allow the fan to get enough clearance from the shroud but also to align it to the crank pulley.

Maybe they changed the hub design since then?

Thanks!

Actually, let me take apart mine tonight. Maybe I'm going insane and I didn't put mine in either.

Thanks!

Just checked: Didn't use the spacer. My brain played tricks on me.

Thanks!

I did the RS single belt several years ago. No spacer required.
