Default 991 cup vs viper acr

I've been thinking about getting a 991 cup car but I'm seeing some very well driven viper acr-s on the track that seem hard to beat frankly with any Porsche. Now I know it's a Dodge and it's not a prestigious brand like Porsche or Ferrari but I really don't care. I just want to go around the track as fast as possible for my skills and budget. I'd appreciate any inputs from guys who've had either or both on the track as far as performance, reliability, consumables and maintenance costs.
Thank you

Well---a Cup car is not a street car. Maintenance and track support are quite different. If you want the simplicity of a street car, and speed of a race car, then the Viper does very very well. But--it is a different experience. One needs to understand how To drive an aero car. Other options include any of the top end sports cars, along with adding a stickier tire like the Hoosiers. Word of caution, today's cars are plenty fast. As fast or faster than race cars from just a few years ago. But--they lack the true race car safety equipment. That Viper AcR does not have a full cage in it, which concerns me when it is driving as fast or faster than many race cars

I race a cup car. Fast as F. Expensive. How expensive?

3 sets of $2400 tires per weekend. You WILL destroy 5 sets of tires before you figure out how to adjust brake bias on your brand new Non-ABS car.

ACR fronts last 1.5 days. Rears last 5. It has ABS. and way more aero so you basically just huck it into the corners.

Track support for cup car- 1-2 mechanics per day. A 991 is so complex with the setup that you cannot do it yourself. Also- you need air jack stuff. Etc etc. PITA

An Acr: set it up at the shop. Go drive. SMASH EVERYONE. the car is easy to drive but you need harnesses. You will bonk your head on the roof, the door jamb and burn your ankle on the exhaust. But you will smash everyone.

Sorted cup:
991.1: 160
991.2: 235+

ACR: 130-150.
Optional: DSC tractive computer suspension.
Some guys do headers etc but not needed. Car has 650lb ft of torque. If you need more get a nascar.

CJ thanks a lot for your feedback. Why do you think the front tires on the Viper only last one and half day? Is it all that downforce? Did you ever try any other tires other than Kumhos?
How long did it take to get the car dialed in?
Did you have to make different adjustments for different tracks?
How expensive are those ceramic rotors? And how long do you think they would last? I know a lot of this is also driver dependent. I'm not too hard on the equipment

Last weekend a "Street" ACR did a 1:59 something at the RTR Watkins Glen DE. Older Cups are a little faster, new Cups much faster.

I've been leaning towards a cup for a while, but there are so many new offerings hitting the market I've not pulled the trigger. R8 GT4, 570S GT4 etc - R8 still comes with the V10 and will be targeting lower running costs.

C.J. covered most of it. Not a fair comparison really.. Ones a race car req track support and set up. The others a street car. Do the cup if you plan to race it. Lapping a cup in a de on cold brakes and slicks could be distraous given the difference in closing speeds.. Figure 4-4.5k an hr to run a cup. Guessing a street car would be easily half that.

Are we talking competition or DE fun?

I had an ACR, 2010.....I'm a pretty good driver but not a chance my skills would ever get to the level of the car.....I would assume the same for a Cup car.....

Guys unless you are racing or testing- a cup car is not the solution.

If you want to do awesome track days in a dedicated car:

GT4 Clubsport
Mclaren 570GT4
BAC Mono (FIA Crash approved)
Viper ACR (need harnesses and fire protection)
GT3RS w/ roll cage + fire protection

The GT4 cars are way more forgiving. They allow you to

1) use ABS
2) somewhat "unstressed" engines that should last forever
3) lots of tire options
4) cages + safety

Our race team's car after 1.6 seasons of racing still dynos at the same HP it's always had.

The mono is awesome for anyone who wants to drive open wheelers with the ease of operation of a car.

Hi Just want to put my two cents into it, I'm relatively new to tracking got hooked on a 991 GT3 RS, I think I got it to pretty competitive times with aero etc (have Yoko slicks for testing next week) Should be 1-2 seconds behind a mark 1 991 cup car we are expecting. I think it is pretty great given the fact that you can change the tires and drive it on the street and it always feels special to drive on the highway with halo buckets a front roll cage and the "cup" suspension. Having said all that though am planning to build a time attack evo 9. I find alot of satisfaction coming from modding and personalizing the car and often times there is more joy in that journey of improving the car than just buying a perfect car to begin with, but you can buy a 991 cup and try to fiddle with it to chase GT3R times (abs kit, manthey wide body, more aero, mathey power pack etc)

Sorry to say this but I see no point in modding a cup car.

They are for racing other cup cars or doing 24 hour enduros.

Throwing 60-80k-100k+ at a 225 car to get to the performance of a 375,000 car...you can just be a better negotiator and buy a used GT3R straight off someone for 300k and get your ABS and all the other stuff.
