Default Proof of new engine?

When Porsche replaced engines in the 996s and Boxsters back in the day, did they put any sort of recall sticker on the vehicles? If not, absent of receipts, is there any way to tell if an engine has been replaced?

We have limited history on a 996 I'm fixing up for a friend. But when Autozone hooked up to the OBD port to test the battery awhile back, they said it has half the miles the odometer shows. I didn't think anything of it at the time. Recently I saw a small recall sticker in the upper left corner of the engine compartment lid on a 996 for sale on which Porsche had replaced the engine. The car I have has the same sticker, but maybe it is for something completely different. I think is says something about emissions? Probably wishful thinking here...

Post a picture of the sticker. When Porsche replaced the engine with a re manufactured engine AT was inserted into the engine serial number.

My original M96/01 engine number:

Don't think so...no recall sticker. If an original engine was deemed to be replaced by Porsche, the replacement engine number would now have an AT in it. And they did not do an odometer reset either. Are you sure he wasn't reading the engine hours? Anyway, the engines were never recalled by Porsche and no other evidence of a replacement engine put in by Porsche exist except for the engine number with an AT in it.

Good info, thanks. Where can I find the engine number? Looks to be drivers side just behind with rear wheels...

Photo of sticker attached. I guess it really is just an emissions recall sticker. Not signed though?! Maybe it for off over time or they forgot to sign it.

JimmyB, those wheels look great on your car. From a base 997.1?
