Default Kalahari Beige/Brown 85.5 944

I just picked up an 85.5 944 last weekend. It is Kalahari beige with a brown interior, 141,000 miles, with 7 and 8 X 16" phone dials. There are a few issues with it, no a/c, the odometer gear recently broke, the leather is worn and a bit dried. My kids are helping to restore it and get paid with some skills and car rides.

So far, we have replaced the original door speakers with some $20 speakers. Cleaned all the window switches and lubed the window channels, the passenger switch on the driver's side was bad so we replaced it. Turn signals stopped working and we traced it down to the switch. Popped the rivets and rebuilt the stalks and now the turn signals work again. Applied Obenauf's leather oil to the seats, gear shift, steering wheel, and parking brake. Cleaned the brake dust from the barrels of the wheels. Today we started steam cleaning the engine and transmission to verify if there are any leaks.

Once the orders roll in, we will get some keys made, fix the odometer gear, replace the hood shocks, and a few other small things. After the odometer gear replacement we can start driving and maybe get the a/c fixed.

The first two pictures are from the ad. The rest are once I got it home. Anyone know what option codes C88 or V61 are?

Yep - reminds me of my first 944 - Herbie.

Visit Clark's Garage for the option decoder. http://www.clarks-garage.com/
No listing for either of those codes.

Great color! Looks like these option codes have come up before. Unfortunately, no clear answers were listed in the thread. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-code-c88.html

Exact color combo of my '86. I receive quite a few comments on the color since it is different from the hordes of red 944's out there.

Having my windows and back glass tinted next week. Nice to see how it looks on the same color car.

Thanks for all the comments. My first 944 was also an 85.5, but was all black with black fuchs. I have scoured the web with no luck. I may try getting a COA to see if it will answer the question as to the codes.

The tint was applied by the P.O. in 2005 and still looks nice.

As Don has mentioned, they are undoubtedly a group package ["touring", "sport", etc] for marketing purposes.

In your case, something like a package comprised of your optional 15" Fuchs [M401], cruise control [M454], and anti-theft device [M533].

Mel,

Thanks, it would be nice if we could get something from the factory as to what were in the packages. M401 is an option code for Fuchs? I thought M393 and M395 were the Fuchs and M400 and M401 were the phone dials and cookie cutters. I've been looking at some 17" replica Fuchs for a project down the road.

Alex,

Could you take a close look at the tint on your back glass? Is it once piece or ?

The only shop I could find around me that would attempt to tint the 944, raised the white flag after five attempts with tint from two different vendors. They were trying to do it in one piece, but as they explained the new tints are lot thicker today than even five years ago and won't form around the window correctly without wrinkles.

They can do it in 2-3 pieces, with the seams being hidden on the defroster lines. I don't have an issue with that, but they are concerned a bit since it's not perfect. The owner showed me an employee's car that was two pieces.. if you looked really hard you could see a tiny imperfection.

It was done in the pieces. The center section is one piece and the two curved wings are separate. The drivers side starts just to the left of the rear wiper and the passenger side is roughly the same spot.

Here is a copy of the receipt. Not sure if they are still in business, but maybe they can assist.

From my understanding...

M393...club sport rims, 16"
M395...light metal rims, forged, 16" [aka 16" Fuchs]
M401...light metal rims, forged, 15" [aka 15" Fuchs]

I used some clay to get an impression of the transmission code. I had a receipt from the previous owner for a swap for turbo transmission, but I was unsure what the actual transmission was. The transmission cooler lines gave me a clue that it was a turbo trans installed. The clay got a decent impression and I now know it is a 5P transmission built on 25 Jun 87.

According to Clarke's Garage, this is an 016R transmission for a 944 Turbo with transmission cooler and without LSD. I was hoping I would be lucky enough to get LSD, but no such luck. Changed the fluid and noticed a little bit of metal shavings, but nothing too worrisome.
