I joined Rennlist three years ago this month, I believe it was on
a Sunday, by Friday I was the owner of a pristine 26k mile 996 40th AE
(wonderful car despite all 996 negativity)
Alway had a pang in my stomach for a 928 after seeing them at the Chicago
Auto Show in 1979, so I began a casual hunt for one.
It had to be red, Guards Red after a Rennfax I did for 996 cabriolet that went to a Las Vegas resident
I missed on an '85 with some 63k on the odometer, same owner for 9 years
with 9 years of service records. The exterior was a 9+, but the interior was showing some neglect. I was 2nd right of refusal but knew the car was going elsewhere
I purchased an '86 last week and it was delivered without incident today, despite the monsoons plaguing northern Illinois
a 31,9xx vehicle, with a clean record (CarFax, Autocheck, which can mean virtually nothing)..I purchased the car with no service records, just an owners manual
But I had it inspected and a light service (brake bleed and transflush) at
Beckley Imports, in Des Moines, IA
It was as represented, a 30+ yo, 31,9xx car
a big thanks to John Selby @ Beckley for accommodating me on 2 day notice and for working in concert with the transporter.
It will need a thorough going thru, definitely needs tires as it feels like a Flinstone mobile, brakes and engine feel strong
The car really (like any Porsche) needs to be driven, along with all fluids updated
The vehicle was picked up yesterday and delivered today (300 miles)

Standard issues, radio (original) but non-operative, needs wiper blades
**** for the mirrors, hatch release will need some attention
I'll spend the next year getting this car in top mechanical condition as I'd really like to run up the miles doing some long tours

Change the timing belt and water pump before more driving and then do your fuel lines. Also, be mindful of your power steering pressure hose because those have been responsible for many fires. My fabulous wife found a hydraulic shop to rebuild my power steering pressure hose, including the mid-hose restriction fitting, for $58.

Incredible low miles - not many around still in the 30's.
It's an auto Jeff, what I wanted so I'm ok in traffic
I purposely avoid rush hour in my 911 be cause it can be gruesome to
drive a stick in some Chicago traffic
Some long distance drives scheduled for this car, and it HAD to be Guards Red
a couple of interior shots as promised, as well as the engine bay
some observations, po only put 700 miles on this car in about 2 years of ownership
there were 2 other semi-exotics in the garage and he did work out of state
Sunroof close function is a bit sticky and I think the switch needs a cleaning
(thankfully the wrench was included)

Here's my biggest concern, other than the fact I'm certain the TB and water pump haven't been replaced (scheduling ASAP)
the auto trans hits HARD, much harder than I'm comfortable with,
mostly around the REVERSE to PARK and NEUTRAL to REVERSE
the DRIVE function seems OK
I can feel a bit of movement at the engine and at the rear
atm, I'm not completely comfortable driving it until these conditions are
diagnosed and corrected

Sunroof is a bit of a pain, especially if it hasn't been moved much. There's a really good writup on it, it's linked in the "New Visitor" sticky. Last page, near the end.
There's a known issue with the reverse gear in the autos. Not too sure about it (I have a 5 speed).

Water coming in the window wells and into my basement (midwesterners will understand) and volleying emails with my largely inept property management company
VERY nice! Though, I am a bit biased about Guards Red 1986.5 928's...
Search for 'bowden cable adjustment' for your transmission. Trans should be an A28.07. In a nutshell, there is a control cable that goes from the lever cluster on the engine fan bracket back to the passenger's side of the transmission casing. This cable can go out of adjustment, causing issues.
As well, check vacuum and lines to the vacuum modulator on the driver's side of the transmission.
