You guys are hilarious. I'll giveing her a tap-tap-taparoo!

Thanks Sean, but it's not an issue of activating the starter. That part is fine. It just doesn't want to keep the shaft engaged with the starter gear (continues to spin tho). I think that's called the "Bendix."

Back to a webinar on genomics pipelines...

I heard ya. The additional voltage by not using the ignition switch and relays may just free it up for the weekend. Worth trying right?

Andrew, I bought a starter for $180 at NAPA, solved all my problems on the street S4 - quickly!

You don't want to be screwing around with it at the track, just buy a new one.

Well, this is an interesting and timely thread. The "bumblebee" car (yes checkmates bumblebee has been rebuilt and back in action, now full trackday setup) starter just did the same thing last night! Starter spins no problem, but no engagment. This has been happening intermittently for about a year. Now finally refuses to engage at all. Car of course has headers also. Went to mid ohio 2 weeks ago, wonder if that finally cooked it? Crap, more development work/ fab some heat shields.

Yeah, Napa might be the easiest solution. Just looked online and a reman Bosch is $140.

AO, if you do open your starter up, let us know what you find. Curious what actually gets cooked.

If after this thread he still needs a push start, I'm using my Denali.

The plot thickens. I got under the car tonight, and I found that the top mounting bolt was missing, and the other was finger loose! Yikes! I'm pretty sure that the loose starter is causing a misalignment. Once I get it Bolted up snug and aligned, everything should be good. Not a biggie.

However, whiles under the car I noticed some drips! the steering rack was pissing out fluid! So I had to yank out the steering rack. I'll address the starter tomorrow after I get a replacement rack figured out. Ugh!

For anyone that does need a new starter and not a couple bolts and a wrench to fix their starter problem (AO, glad that's all yours looks to be), I have the high-torque one from 928MS on my car and it's excellent. Turns over super strong - makes a completely different sound than any of my old Bosch ones in previous Porsches.

Just to close out this thread...

After a whirlwind 24 hours of some desperate phone calls (thanks Roger!) I found a rack rebuilder about 20 min from my house. One of our 928 vendors uses them for their rack rebuilds! They were able to work me in such that I dropped off the rack at 10AM, and had it back in my hands at 2:30 PM! Looked like a brand new rack! So happy! By 7PM, the rebuilt rack was installed complete with a set of delrin bushing which I hope will improve steering feel on the track. Best of all, I went in for tech inspection on Saturday, and passed! Woohoo!

Oh yeah... and as for the starter... New bolts took care of it! Made sure to locktite the lower one. Didn't do it to the top because if the allen head rounds out...

Thursday, I'm off to Road America! Will be meeting up with Hacker and few other Wisconsin personalities!

Excellent Andrew, glad it all worked out - 2 less things to worry about at the track!

See you Friday for sure, maybe Thursday.
