Ok so we are making progress....the issue several of you mentioned as a possibility is now reality. The painter is unhappy with the way the front fender matches with the hood and has sanded it down to respray it. The local PPG rep was on scene today but not sure what he can accomplish. The drivers door touch up blended beautifully into the fender. I'm not an expert nor do I play one on tv.
Here are pics of the drivers side blend.

I'm going to write something here that will prolly upset some folks. Your paint has oxidized at a normal rate. The new paint will outgas it's VOCs for months. May sound lazy, but leave the car outside, with the left side of the car facing southwest to absorb the most light and heat. Wait for a month, and then wash and clean the car then check it again. The paint will change tint slowly, and eventually it'll match up well. If you respray, have him add some white, and some blue(very little!). This will have the effect of pre-oxidizing the new paint.
Did he use the gas door to try matching? If not, or if he doesn't have a computer to match it, then it's all done by trial and error method. Red it tough. Frankly, I'd leave it for a month and see what happens.

Hey doc thanks for the tip. I think the ppg guy said add grey if I recall the conversation correctly. This particular car is a driver and was something on my list of wants for a long time. If this where my 996 4s I would be much more concerned but for $1500 to re and re passenger fender, paint it and prep and paint drivers door I think it is reasonable. Thats $1500 cnd dollars so like $8.00 your money.
I'll send pics when the project is complete. This ones in the Random pic thread as well.

Yup, gray might work. I tend to use primaries for tint changes, because - hey, I'm an amateur, but listen to him, he's on the right path. BTW, the 928 is coming up in value. Might as well do it right. If you are in the great white north, leaving it out in the 'sun' may not do much.

now is a good time to remove the metal collars in the washer tank and fill tube ,
and replace the three way junction,
good luck with the paint job

OK, so here is a relevant question I think.
I thought that the type of oil based paint used up to the GTS production is simply not legal anymore and therefore not available.
So, you can not use the same paint used originally. And, different paints oxidize/fade at different rates.
Is this thinking all correct? If yes, the "shameful thread killer's" advice seems good. The only way to avoid the problem completely with this single stage red would be a complete repaint. Better to do a limited amount of work and see how things look a little later.
Caveat: I haven't done body work since the 80's though...

So, the paint chem industry has been savaged by both state and fed VOC limit regs. Glasurit, which is owned by BASF makes their top of the line single stage and it has ~490g/L VOC content. Not surprising, the fed limit is about 500g/L. Texas state(except around DFW metro) has a limit of 590g/L, but my guess is that all paint sold in TX meets the state or fed limits.
However, in bay Area CA, the limit is way lower, like 300g/L or something, so Glasurit(and PPG) have special formulas for these regions. The old orig Glasurit back in the 80s prolly had a VOC content over 1000g/L, and the answer to fading and yellowing was to balance the VOCs with the paint solids so that it wouldn't fade, but also wouldn't crack. This is why you don't have your plane, or classic car painted in the peoples republic. It'll surely fade more than a car painted in TX.
the chem has changed a lot since these cars were built. Just get the best quality paint you can get from any vendor, and live with what you get. Red is gonna fade, all you can hope is that it fades into the current color given time.

I am actually feeling confident that it will look decent. My guy is using PPG and he is not rushing the job. Its all about balancing total investment in car vs reward of ownership. Picking it up tomorrow afternoon. Will send pics in when finished.

Didn't get a chance to pick the car up until today. I would say 94% but I can be ultra pickey....yes the headlight trim is missing and the hood alignment is out. Thoughts??

I'd be pretty happy with that. On a nice sunny day you probably wouldn't pick it anyway. Now hop in and drive it so people get to see it. 928's on the road are becoming a scarce sight.

Red is a bugger to match, and when you think you have it right, it will show a difference in artificial light.
Looks a little orange to me too, which might be more obvious under artificial light conditions. You'll soon know once you've had it out under a few different lighting conditions.

First off, fluorescent light is the worst.
Any defects or mismatch will jump out at you in that light.
But it looks pretty good, even in the harsh light.
