Default How do I move an engine

I have an M96 that has been sitting on the jack for weeks and it's time to do something with it. But how do I move it? Do I need an engine hoist? Where do I attach to the engine and with what? As always, all help and irrelevant sarcastic comments are appreciated.

Yep, that's an M96, all right.

Grab it by the AOS with one hand and the oil filler tube with the other and just horse it around.

I'm afraid it would spook my horse. It weighs half as much as he does.

Personally I don't see the problem. Turning it on and grinding it into 2nd has always worked fine for me...

Put it on dolly. Take off shirt. Drag it around backyard. Take pictures.

Well, I guess all that answers your question...My question is how did you end up with a spare?

Seriously though, I would run two long bolts with washers through the mounting holes on the front along with two brackets that you can fabricate to attach a chain or strap. I would use the loop on the back, depending on how it is mounted. I can't see how secure it is in the picture. It looks like the loop was put there for that purpose. If the loop doesn't look strong enough, use one of the transmission bolts in the top hole with a bracket. I have a couple of lifting brackets I took off a Mazda engine from a car I scrapped. They work great in these situations. Once you have the straps/chains attached, pick up with an engine hoist. This keeps you from doing anything that will hurt your back or give yourself a hernia. I have moved around literally dozens of engines over the years. Back in my 20s, I picked up a Ford 289 block and gave myself a hernia. Recovery from the surgery was very painful. Eric

I should also add that you can probably buy all the hardware you need from Lowes or Home Depot including d-rings with a bolt on one side, section of removable chain to attach to a bracket, etc.

You would be surprised how many times picking up an engine has been screwed up. Typically happens when picking up by straps that are not secured around the top of the engine. The engine just tips over and falls to the ground. Might be a little harder to drop a flat 6 though.
