Did mine this weekend, longer bolts came with the coils. Coils thicker upgraded and shields went back on no problem. Got great price from Warehouse 33. $255 shipped with Rennlist discount. Coils, plugs, oil filter, air filter all for that price.
Notice the coolant overflow hose was right next to the rear coil.It had been barfing directly onto the misfiring coil. Why do they have that located there? I rerouted it, but it really needs to be about 5 inches longer.
Got the left bank coils out. All three are cracked in various places. #1 has a nice crack in it. It is the one farthest back...most exposed so it got water soaked.

I got my right bank coils out and no drama there. Coils on the right bank look way better than 1-3. There are cracks all over those coils. So now we know, coils don't last much longer than 139K miles LOL (probably should have replaced them all the last spark plug change darnnit!)

Given that I live in Florida and on any given day or hour I can be driving in torrential rain with puddles that rival small lakes. Things are going to get wet on my daily driver and that is reality. The point being, my aged coils were old and cracked, and are being replaced with new. Just a point of reference for the next person who has to deal with misfires, rough idling, and CEL's blinking after washing the car. Just replace the friggin things and drive on!

I drive, my car gets dirty, and I wash all the time...I just don't use a hose.
Update: Still awaiting new coil packs. Should arrive tomorrow. Wife arrived home from work and I showed her the cracked coils on the work bench. Her eyes never really saw the coils or cracks...because she was looking at my kinda rusty wheel lug bolts. I said I'll just clean those up, but there is a solution. She said what? I said titanium lug bolts. She said "I want those...get them and have them shipped asap". So doing a little lug nut upgrade as well. I love my wife! It works very well. I'm a believer. Keep in mind, it's really only good for maintenance washes. If your car is filty, i'd do the standard soap/water/hose method first.
Update: new upgraded larger coil packs in. Longer bolts came with the coils. All in and running perfectly. Did an oil/filter change while "in there". Got my free replacement LN magnetic plug back in the sump (my other one broke last oil change). Car sounds just awesome and seems to be a bit more spirited. Only problem - the heat shields do not clear the newer larger coils. So I'm going to get some SS studs, nuts and lock nuts to bring them out a bit. Measurement shows I need about another 10MM or so. I looked up the heat shields for the 997 (new coils start with 997) and they are the exact same PN as the 996. So HUH! I dicked up the right side heat shield trying to tighten it up because the coil bolts hit and bent it, so I'll get some new heat shields before implementing my solution.
I have to say the new coil bolts make this a really easy job. You can get an 8MM wrench right on those so easy to tighten. Beats the crap out of the old hex bolts.
