Default Some fun after car wash...Coil Packs!

Sunday washed cars. Did all the good stuff and gave it lots of attention just like every other time. Afterwards drove to the store. Bad stuff happened, rough running, throwing CEL's and finally the dreaded blinking CEL. Pulled back into garage and checked the codes. Mainly misfires on #1 so I figured the coil pack got wet. Let it dry overnight and fired up this morning. More rough running and more codes on cylinder 1. So now I'm in the process of replacing all of the OE coil packs. Visually I see nothing wrong with the #1 coil pack and the plug was in tight, but heck, I got 139K out of the OE coil packs so time for replacement. They are just a wear part anyway. All in for coil packs and shipping $259 from Auto Atlanta. Confirmed for M96/01 with Part Number 997 602 107 02 replacing OE 996 602 102 00. Can't wait to see how much better it runs!

I do want to drop the engine! But then I think my list of repairs and replacement parts would not bode well with the wife...yet. Just thinking about the coil pack replacements is making me tired. Guess I'm getting old.

You'll need longer bolts and spacers for your heat shields. The updated 997...coils are thicker and will not allow the shields to go back on without using spacers to extend them out further.

You're not doing it right!

Just change the spark plugs.
Then just change one coil.
Then the second.
Next will be the third and fifth.
Six is next.
Finally number 4.

You NEVER change all the plugs all at once.







Well, at least that's how most of these threads go...

That's pretty much what happened to me in 2016 when I was down in Daytona Beach....had a misfire on number 1 after the expansion tank cracked and dropped fluid. So I bought two new coil packs, installed them on 1 and 5, came home, bought 6 plugs and 4 more new coil packs.

Those 6 plugs and 4 coil packs are still sitting in my toolbox.....need to install those!

Thanks for that info. Did not know that but did know about the longer bolts so ordered those with the upgraded coil packs. I'll have to look into that. P/N available?

This is why I wash the deck lid with a Q-Tip and mister bottle.

Just did this last week, same scenario(114,000 out of OEM), Porsche now list spacers as NA, dealer used aftermarket.

Works great even on dark colors plus you can wash the car in the garage. I use the two bucket method - one of the detail specialists in my area recommended and he uses on all sorts of exotic cars.

I've only washed my car a couple times but I put a large trash bag over the engine and then closed the cover. Of course I made sure the engine was cool before covering it.

I just replaced my coils and plugs last weekend with the upgraded thicker coils
My heat shields went back on just fine
Btw, it idles much smoother now

Obviously see if your shields go back on using old bolts and no spacers.

If not...

As far as spacers, I know I fabricated my own from some spare tubes I had laying around. Not sure I had to get longer bolts for the heat shields, OE's might have had enough threads with the spacers.

New bolts for the coils should come with the new coils, mine did.
